The Truth About Altums

Two tank,

Thank you for all that great info.

I feel very stupid... But I can't seem to figure out how to pm you. Maybe I don't have enough privileges yet?

Sylvester

I fixed that for you. Welcome to TFF! :D

Be careful buying from an LFS selling at $20, that is pretty cheap. We were paying $18-23 from the importer last year and then you can add the shipping. I paid $50/fish for two larger altums which had been in another person's tank for close to 18 months. And I drove an hour each way to pick them up.

Often angels are sold as altums which are not. There are no wild Altums coming in at this time of year. They normally arrive mid summer into the early fall. After that you only find whats been held since then. I would want to know more about the source of the fish before I would buy them.

That said, there are ways stores might have true Altums now. But they would have to be rare F1s or from somebody who got them a while ago and had to sell them now for some reason.

My local fish store is selling them for 20$ each and they are quite a decent size. i am in mass usa.

That is interesting. So am I. Would you mind telling me the name of the store?
Sorry for the late reply, the store is called tropic isle aquarium and is in framingham massachussets. Ask for ellis or katie as they are my favorite shop helpers. I highly reccommend tropic isle as they wont just try to sell you fish. They will even tell you if a fish you like is not doing well. And the angels might be 15$ but i could be wrong :)

I am possitive they are altums. They were with the discus and i can tell the difference between regular angels and altums very easily. I also trust the store 100%.
