you're right on that, i should have stated that i didnt need help on this post until i ask a question. these fish have been in this tank for the past almost 3 months & everything is still thriving. but im done going back & forth so its cool.

i do have a question now.. my balas arent even close to 9 inches (usual breeding size, but mine are dancing & doing all signs that they are quite fond of one another

) they're maybe 4-5" but they seem like mates; do breeding pairs really need a school? do they go back to a school or pretty much stay with their mate?

even more hilarious

they are cypronids - they have no desire to make any form of monogamous pair like a perch type would. As far as I know no one has bred them but then again I have never perused them as a fish for the hobby.

They will just scatter eggs with either one that will come their way.

FYI 3 months is nothing to these fish - make an educated decision on these fish at 18 months to a year

Wills

Lolly123 - thanks for the kudos

yes the females spread eggs and then the male will spray sperm but without a powerhead to put a current in the water it wont really spread at all. & yes people have bread them its just not common at all.

sorry i tried to ask a question.. ill return my curiosity/knowledge & research to books & the proper fish site that are dedicated to only research/studies. & just post pics & vids so i can keep a journal. thanks for the concerns folks.

FYI i have mentioned this a couple times.. but i know where ill be a year or so from now.. 55g-125g (they're going into the 55g within the next 3-4 months)

Is there any way to give some kind of awesome person points to Lolly123 and Willis? Cause they need some.

Of course your fish are fine in the tank right now- but please tell me you can comprehend the fact that time passes. And animals grow. And as they grow, their housing needs in captivity change.

Bottom line: I'm glad your fish are healthy. Your tank looks nice. But in a few years it will be a literal death trap and your fish will become deformed stunted socially inept and deprived nut cases that will live a woefully short lifespan. That is not good fishkeeping. That's not speculation, that's based on knowledge of these fish in the wild and previous cases of them being kept improperly.

So it's up to you. It's alright if you don't acknowledge any of the advice here, you've read it and it's in your mind. I can only hope that some day you heed our warnings.

Edit: Thank you for trying to not come across as a butthead. I hope I did the same, but I'm kinda notorious for typing insensitively.

Hydroplane, we would always like to encourage people's curiosity and most of us here attempt at providing adequate information, which I think we have in this case. Whether it is information that the OP is going to want to hear or not, is another matter. But we would not serve our community members well at all, especially new comers to the hobby & forum, if members fabricated information in order to agree with the OP.

What I am trying to get at here, is not necessarily the plan you have, I don't agree with it and think it is an unnecessary risk, where risks don't need to be taken, especially with the abundance of information and freedom of choice that a lot of us have nowadays. What I am saying is, you may get away with what you plan to do, but to place yourself in this situation in the first place is considered bad practice, especially when you are keeping the type of fish that you are. And secondly, people take time out of their lives to help people on this forum, it's extremely frustrating when all of the information you provide is cast aside and almost implied as nonsense, which is what I feel you have done in some of your previous posts.

I just think you need to adjust to the common courtesy that people pay to eachother in a place like this. There is no embarrassment in being mis-informed or making poor judgements, we have all done it, but most of us would recognise that a place like this makes us better hobbyists. I hope you do make the necessary changes, purely for the sake of your fish.
