Juwel went through a period of sending out some very second rate packages with a lot of problems that they were already quite aware of, the main of these problems was the light bar failing and the center brace snapping, particually on the Rio 300 models. I personally had so many problems with my Rio 300 that i'm suprised the tank is still intact, usually i would have taken a hammer to anything else that let me down that badly, the only original part of the tank is now the glass everything else has been replaced but not before losing a few hundred quids worth of fish many of which couldnt be replaced. I have also been let down by both of the two fluval filters i've owned after both decided to dump the contents of the tanks they were running onto the floor.

Personally i advise moving away from package deal tanks, they work out cheaper but you have to ask yourself why, as with everything in life you only get what you pay for. Build your own package from seperate items with quality equipment from respected manufactorers, you'll spend a little more but in the end will have a far superior end product, and if you really cant be bothered to do that then check out the Rena range of tanks, theyre twice the price of Juwels but the quality shows.

juwel aquariums are very good i have never encountered any trouble and get annoyed with how everyone bad mouths them i apoligize if i come off aggresive here i am not trying an argument i am just stating my point of view
i agree on you with package deal thing though cfc
sorry for going off the thread subject just had to say that

 I've recently been looking at upgrading my Juwel Vision 180 to a Rio 300 - I take it you think this is a bad move ? :/
I don't have the space to go any larger and just like the "look" of the Juwels.
Would it be best if I perhaps just buy the stand and then have a tank & lid made (or bought) seperately ?
But then the lid wouldn't match the base ?

For those interested in the Juwel Tanks Centrebrace issues - see this topic by Jimboo.

Why not have a custom built tank to suit the space you have and have a stand and hood built for you to match any existing furniture in the house? I recomend these people for custom made tanks http://www.windsor-aquatics.co.uk/ since their service and prices are second to none (and you dont see me say that very often) and then find yourself a good local joinery firm to build the stand and hood, or if the cost of a bespoke stand and hood is too much there is always Mer Aquatica although dont expect to be able to get hold of anyone in a hurry from here http://www.meraquatica.co.uk/ . Then you can build your filtration heating and lighting to your own requirements and have a perfect aquarium, its worth the extra money in my book anyway.

Thanks CFC :) I will certainly explore those options.
My pictus would love a larger tank and it breaks my heart seeing it swim from side to side without really being able to "stretch it's fins" - even in my 47.5 US gallon. I get the feeling even my Rainbows would like some more room to zoom around.

Thanks very much for your reply CFC. I've had my vision 260 for over 3 years now, with original heater & original power unit for the filter. I have replaced the bulbs though. Perhaps ive just got a "good" tank & have been lucky. Anyways, i think i might go for a custom setup just to be a different! Thanks again!
