NielP it hasnt gotten that cold here yet...about minus 15 at the most...That snow picture was a few years ago..."The Ice Storm" of 1998. As to how to get the liner that nice...here are a few tricks:
I used a black thick plastic as my liner...cheaper
After i had flatened all of the black plastic used for the liner (first removing any stones from the dug pond hole) I covered the liner hanging out of the pond with plant soil...Then i CAREFULLY placed old limestone rocks that i found at a landfill around the edges of the pond. Then add a bit more soil to the areas you want to emphasize your flowers...
