My Mom in Australia keeps parrots. Her and my Step-Dad have aviaries all in the backyard. She breeds budgies, cockatiels and a lot of others. She mostly sells cockatiels and budgies to pet shops. I just moved away 2 1/2 years ago so a lot of these birds are my pets too. The Galahs are both boys named Chrissie (for Christmas) and Baby because we found him as a really young baby on the side of the road with a broken wing. Both are very tame and say a lot of things. The Cockatoo acts nothing like a Cockatoo..he rarely squacks like most typical Cockatoos do. My Mom also keeps plumheads, a variety of lorikeets, 28's, quails, doves, canaries, lovebirds, the list goes on.

Here are a bunch of pictures I put together. Some are older but most are recent. My Mom just handraised 9 cockatiels from the nest. One she raised from a little pink thing and the other 9 she raised when they were quite a bit older. She decided to raise them because the parents wanted to breed again and were trying to kick them out of the nest box and it was a bit too cold still for them to live outside that young.

This is Duncan and Vella the long billed Corella

And finally a nice little group shot. A baby lovebird, the yellow cockatiel and Poppy my Mom's dog. She is a pomeranian mix so usually she has a lot of hair and looks really cute but for the summer my Mom has shaved her so she is looking a little bat like LOL.

toooo cuuute elizabeth... :D my LFS/LPS has a red mollucan (?) lory that i'm just dying over  but they seem a bit specialist to be a starter bird.

I used to hand raise cockatiels back in the day, and I truly enjoyed doing it. I wouldn't mind doing it again some day. Beautiful birds!

Thanks all for your nice comments :D

I Love parrots too! I was born in Michigan but moved to Australia when I was 15 and it was like a dream come true with all the different types of parrots there were and how cheap they were to buy. I remember when I was younger in Michigan going to a pet store and petting a tame talking cockatoo and it cost 10,000 US dollars. For Duncan My Mom, Step-Dad and I went to a shop and they paid only 100 AU dollars. :hyper:

For Australians it might be normal just to see a flock of Galahs in a park or Cockatoos (many other types too) but for me when I was living in Australia everytime I would see them it would amaze me! I had to pinch myself just to make sure it was real. We would (course Mom and Step-Dad still do) get different types of lorikeets in our backyard licking the nectar from the bottle brush trees and once we had 9 Cockatoos land in our backyard visiting Duncan our Cockatoo!!!

I miss Australia a lot!!!! :-(

OHMYGOSH those are A-door-AH-bul!!

I love the babies...they are so cute...I like how their feathers look kinda like hedgie quills.

They have Lorkeets at the zoo where I take my son..for $1 you can buy a cup of Nectar and feed them...they get all over you lol.

GREAT pics!

He he! georgeous pictures! Very cute birds! I used to have a parrot - but I didn't really get along with it.

When I was in Australia I went to Healsville Animal Sanctuary - a fantastic place. Anyway, there was this parrot of some kind being taken around, so being the curious me, I stroked it and held it - when the keeper went to take it back it wouldn't let go! Two keepers and a plaster later I left the bird enclosure!

But, they are fantastic animals and I still like them! :look:

SRC how cute is your son and all the rainbow lorikeets on him  He must of had a fun day!

Iused to breed finches & canaries & then went on to lovebirds & cockatiels.

Does she hand rear all of the young?? Most of the birds she keeps seem to native to australia, is that allowed? Here in the UK native birds are only allowed to be kept with extremely strict licensing. Although most of our birds are extremely dull compared to those in Oz!!

littleimp she keeps canaries and finches too. She raised a Java finch and he is as tame as can be. When you think of finches you think of birds that are really fidgety and can't be tamed but they can.

She lives in Australia (Melbourne) so that's why she has alot of birds native to Australia :D

No she doesn't hand rear all the young...most she leaves with the parents and they raise them. The ones she hand rears usually either the parents arn't taking care of them, the parents want to breed so are pushing them out of the box, or ones she wants to tame for herself.

I love parrots. What I realy want is to own is some Hyacinth Macaws which are the most stunning birds.

Our budgie hates me though he won't go near me.

All the pics are great by the way. Im SOOOO jealous of anyone living in Australia! Especially if you're lucky enough to get black cockatoos in your back gardens :grr: You just cant get them over here at all!!

We have red tailed and yellow tailed black cockies here. Across the road there is a big pine forest and they go to eat the seeds. They are the most massive birds, so pretty but they are loud..
