looks nice, personally they scare me i always expect the bubbles to pop :p

as for position i believe they like good flow and lighting so somewhere high and flowing will do them fine!

Actually they can get hurt by too much flow. Try and keep it low-moderate. Lighting they can tolerate a wide range though. If memory serves they're an adaptable species in that regard. That looks to be a good fleshy response where it is so I might keep it there. Just an FYI, it may lash out with some sweepers and hurt the GSP next to it.

Hi Ski, I read that too. Its in a good position with little flow and today has increased in size so will keep it where it is. I agree, the green xenia may get stung, what's the implications of this - will it just die back a bit?

Yeah, it'll just die back a bit. That stuff's otherwise hardy so the rest of the colony will be fine.

oo low flow learn something new everyday .... il just go move the one at work now ... though it seems to be doing well enough!

Hehe, as long as the flowrate doesn't seem to be pulling the flesh away from the skeleton you'll be fine. They do ok with diffuse flow from propeller type powerheads, but will get killed by your point-flow powerheads.

The new Arcadia tubes arrived, a 14k white and actinic blue and wow what a difference. The blue is close to UV and with all the T5's on, the hue looks close to halides which is groovy. Since I've been running them, I can see lots of new life appearing - a nice fancy feather duster worm has appeared... On the flip side, the aiptasia growth is increasing, not sure if the is in reaction to new lighting or their normal growth, better get the Joes Juice in!!

The temperature controller ATC-800 is sorted thanks to Underwurlde, the probe reads correct temp and there is no temperature fluctuation when the T5's come on/off - great!

The auto-top off project is going great, the controller is in and being tested (albeit not attached to a pump). The pump does not have enough head height so I'm going to have to look for an alternative.

Corals are all doing great, the bubble coral is really opening up and looks superb. The mandarin is doing totally great too!!

What a happy post!

just as a note, i barely acclimate my corals, float for 10 minutes in bag, double bags water volume in one go, wait a minute or two, put them in the tank

No causualties so far, corals close and store water, when switched tanks and they re-open, they naturally re-acclimate themselves. Worked for me with mushrooms, zoanthids, torch coral (which infact i didnt bother acclimating at all, just dumped it in since i was in a rush that day) yellow fiji leather (which is a sensitive coral) orange monti cap and some other sort of branching sps coral....

I find acclimation a waste of time.

I was looking in my tank the other day and saw a strange silver thing, looked like a cross between a slug and a snail, looked it up and found out its called a stomatella, groovy never seen one before! Anyway its supposed to be all good so I'm happy and have left him to get on with it.

Last night I was up gaming late (pretty sad for someone my age), I went and had a look through the tank and could see hundreds of small creatures about 2mm long with what looked like 2 x antenna type things, yep you probably know that these are copepods

Now ordinarily you may not get excited, I am though and I'll tell you why.... You see I'm housing a mandarin which I thought had munched its way through all the pods which is why I set up the poor mans refugium. The refugium must be working now and is sustaining more than enough pods for the hungry mandarin!!

The nitrates are down to apporx 25ppm now so whilst not great, they are on a downwards trend. Some of this is due to the tank maturing whilst the rest is possibly down to the bio load?

Around the pumps, I'm getting a fair bit of brown algae, this algae is brown-gray and looks like thin hair and is about 3/4cm long, any ideas? I've spoken to my friend and he experienced this in the early days of his setup, the tang & blenny like it!... My phosphates are at 0.03ppm.

The refugium is prolly helpin too ;)

Sorry, the previous post did not read very well! You are right, I'm sure the refuge with chaeto is a major helper in lowering the nitrates and harbouring different types of pod.

Some sad news today.... I took the Sailfin Tang back to the LFS, whilst it was a great fish it would far too quickly outgrow my little tank and I have to be fair to it!

So, after taking it back, I rewarded myself with two cleaner shrimp. I acclimatised them for about 30mins. They seem fine in the tank, quickly found some nice hiding places. Now I'm just waiting to see them in action!

Everything else seems OK, parameters are holding stable, still slowly bringing the nitrates down...

20% water change yesterday, 3hrs later tested nitrates...

After all the battling after the lost fish, the nitrates finally have returned to well around zero, I tested them a second time just to be sure and its correct, in both resolutions, the nitrates dont register - how awesome is that!! Nitrates were starting to exceed 50ppm... So I'm happy now, parameters looking good!

Watching the clowns, I noticed that one of them was doing a weird shaking dance whilst the other was sniffing around the back end of the fish, is this something to do with mating or sexual maturity?

I've noticed that there is some cyno starting to grow on a piece of LR and several appearances of a pinkish/purple slime algae on the glass. I assume this is something to do with the drop in nitrates?

Yes, a sign of pairing, not necessarily mating though

Yup, cyano will gobble up nitrates quick
