The Jewel Cichlid- What Are Best Conditions For It, How To Make It Gro

How do you give the jewel cichlid the best care as in water parameters etc, what is a good cleaning, feeding routine to make the jewel grow faster. Does anyone keep them?

What caves does it like the best?

I've got a juvenile, that I want to heal up (think it has fin rot) and when it is older and bigger, I want to put in my big tank with my two oscars, or the growout tank (without babies).

IME, Jewels are very tough fish, and if yours only has fin damage, it should live.

We've had ours for about 8 years now, and it has to live in a small tank by itself because it is the most aggressive fish we have, and has beaten a severum twice its size to tatters.

Anyway, to get your Jewel to grow, feed it nutritious food as a staple (Sticks, pellets) and offer it treats on occasion (Bugs, crickets are great, frozen food, etc). A neutral water pH and a temperature around 78-80 degrees will be fine, and as for cleaning the tank, once or twice a week will be good. Any cave that it can fit into is a cave it likes (we used pvc pipes, but many people dislike them because they looks out of place in most tanks)

Also, don't keep your jewel alone (don't keep it with fish it can kill either, catfish should work, as will similarly aggressive cichlids), if your jewel can feel dominant over the fish in its tank, they usually develope great color if they are king of their castle (Ours is a deep maroon/purple) If you want, try breeding jewels, if you get a male and female, they will spawn, and their breeding colors are AMAZING.

The reason jewels attack other fish and have a reputation as being extremly aggressive is because they are kept with the wrong kinds of fish. They do well in mountain stream type tank with fast fish such as barbs and danios, also in tanks with fish larger than, themselves and capable of standing up for themselves.

I just bought my jewel cichlids today. They're blue spots. Beautiful fish arent they?
