You may remember a couple of weeks back, i posted to say my male Cyanorhabdos and female Socolofi had spawned. Well i saw my 1st fry today - for about 2 seconds before she scooped it back in her mouth.

I'll get some pics if i can when she eventually lets them out and IF they survive life in the main tank - i still plan to let nature take its course. :good:

I remember, im glad your letting nature work its-self, I would do the same.
Cant wait for the pics.

Speaking of letting nature take it course!

I was feeding my my mbuna tank about two days ago! And I was watching one of the holding female L. caeruleus drifting among the food and not eating anything! She then spat/exploded the fry out of her mouth all in one go (at least twenty) and began to feed. I hadn't seen this behaviour before as I had always stripped the fish at three weeks or the caeruleus (don't want any more of) would just spit the fry in the tank at night or some other time.

I was amazed to see this behaviour (shock, wonder, awe) at the little fellas hovering in mid water. This is when my wonder and amazement turned to horror. First in like lighting where the peacocks! then followed shortly by the afra cobue. Within a matter of five seconds, what had taken a mother, three weeks of starving to do was lost. Apart from a half eaten fry trying to swim with no tail. Seven seconds! that was also gone!

The ups and downs of fish keeping in under ten seconds!!

Well my Socolofi spat the fry, probably during the day today while i was at work. There is no sign of them though so i suspect they've been eaten already but we'll see.

LOL

so this talk of "nature taking its course" thats just the fry getting eaten right?

LOL

well lets call it what it is LOL!!!

yeh you could argue its nature LOL, i guess!!!

Oh it's certainly nature - a high percentage of Mbuna fry get eaten in lake Malawi, which is probably why they breed so readily and often.

Heres a pic of 2 of my 3 hybrids, its a afra/melanochromis johanni cross

I'm actually hoping a couple might have survived amongst the rocks - i'm interested to see what the resulting fish would look like. :hyper:

That said, i'm certain they'll spawn again. :D

That first one looks like it might actually be quite ugly which is good though. Too many people keep nice looking H's.

Remember this thread?

Well after thinking i'd lost the hybrid babies back in March when their Mum spat them - imagine my surpise when i saw a tiny baby poke it's head out of one of the rocks this weekend. :hyper:

Following careful inspection, i also spotted another 1 so it looks like 2 survived. Hard to tell any colours/markings as they are only about half an inch but bearing in mind the mum is an albino Socolofi and the dad is a M.Cyanorhabdos - that could be interesting.

If they've survived this long - i'm pretty sure they're gonna make it so i'll get some pics asap.

thats great news, i look forward to seeing the pics :)
