Newbie here,
With a newbie question, What is the most expensive fish, that everyone wants, the "Holy Grail" of saltwater collectors?

If its marine fish, then any of the deep sea pygmy angel fish are very rare and some of the very localised ones are virtually non existant in the aquarium trade, species like the Joculator Pygmy are extremely expensive, commanding 4 figure prices. I think theres only a handful of these fish kept in captivity, 5 are in public aquariums and a wealthy individual in the UK has one in his private collection.

But i think the 'Holy Grail' has to be the Conspiculatus Angel, if you want one of these, be prepared to go on a waiting list and pay through the nose.

that Conspiculatus Angel must my very rare like you said. i searched it on google and only 5 or 6 pictures of it came up, but its a nice looking fish:) and the price tag on that baby was 1500 us dollars

I've seen silver arowanas for 1000$ US only like 8" too! Red chili arowana though EXTREMLY hard to maintain  a bit off topic sorry I don't know much about salt water fish...

My personal 'Holy Grail' is Synondontis Granulosus, a catfish found in lake Tanganyika. Considered by some the rarest catfish in the world, they currently have 3 in Aqua Blue Zaire, but i doubt i will have much change out of £1000 if i bought them.

I read in a fish magazine there was a platinum arowana that fetched a few million dollars. You can buy baby ones online for $15,000.

a few million...you have to be dirty rich to pay that much for a fish, i would buy a house a car, dirt bike, a 500 gallon fish tank and fish for that much

Rare specimens of arowana's and koi can very easily go into the tens of thousands...
Zebra pleco's are often a lot more in the average fishkeepers reach, but often still require a a price tag that easily goes over a hundred pounds.

Rarest fish ever...the aquatic dog.

hehe. Seriously though, it's probably the great white shark. Ok, so it's not exactly for the everyday aquarist :p But no one has successfully kept one alive for more than a couple of months in captivity. It's a "holy grail" not because it's rare (which it isn't), but because they're hard to keep.

p.s. the dog picture's not mine, btw. don't freak out on me.

Why fishkiller, that's simply a dogfish!
