Hi All,

Wondering if anyone has every come across anything similar?

My Green Severum, Grace, has been digging a hole now for around 4 days. I first notised a tapping coming from the tank, and upon closer inspection notised Grace moving stones from one place to another.

I thought nothing of it untill a few days later, notised a pile of stones had appeared in the corner of the tank, and looking closer notised Grace had dug about a 2+1/2" deep hole.

She has now reached the glass so instead of going down she's making the hole wider, and I'm wondering whats next?

Is she trying to escape?

Is she bored?

Maybe she's been possesed by Alan Titchmarsh and is doing her own version of Ground Force?!

I did think she might have been getting randy, and if my memorys correct she's and egg layer, hence the hole, however theres no males in the tank..

..so I'm clueless.

Any thoughts?

my useless comment is - mine did exactly the same and I had no replies as to why except it could be HE was getting randy and readying a nest - but mine is a MALE so i wasnt sure - anyway I filled the hole in and move all the gravel and stones back and he's not done it since - until last night whilst I was sat having my hour watching the tank and he decided to pick up all the stones and move them around the tank to a corner and then get mouthfulls of gravel and take it to the top of the tank and spit it out - Wierd fish

Sounds like typical cichlid breeding behavior. While severums commonly will lay their eggs on any flat surface its not uncommon for a pit to be dug. Its basically the fish getting a little horny. Nothing you can do to stop the behavior, you just have to clean up after your fish.
