Hi, my name is Gordon and i am from Malaysia, I am a 15-year old aquatic hobbyist. Recently, I have just bought a Siamese fighting fish (Betta). So, I would like to inquire from anybody here in this forum whether what are the suitable fishes which is compatible with the betta as tankmates. As far as I am concerned, I have tried putting guppies and neon tetras together with it. Unfortunately, due to unknown circumstances the Betta always love to bully the guppies and it loves to intimidate on the neon tetras that I have assigned it to be with my Betta. Also, I wonder why when I placed a Gourami with it, the Betta also fought with the gourami to high hell! it was a very ruthless fight! until the gourami almost bled to death. It also can't get along with Mollies too! and they always fight like what it does with the gourami.

It would be a great pleasure if anybody here could give me a tip of advice whether what are the fishes that is compatible with my betta. Oh yeah, btw, my betta is a male.

Thanks alot! and to whoever you are who gave me this advice, your help will be very much appreciated.

Hi, there are very few fish that the fighters will tolerate, some, like one of mine will not even accept a snail in with them!!
Fighters are solitary fish who really do not need tank mates, the only ones i could recommend if you really want to add more are bottom feeders like corydoras, i have 3 in with my youngest fighter and he gets along with them fine.
I do not recommend putting tail nippers like tetras or anything with bright colours like guppies, in with them!!
Hope that helps. im sure some of the more experienced members will be able to help more too!!

its all about the personallity of the betta some will live fine with any fish some will kill any fish so its just luck. gouramis and bettas never really work well together becuse there in the same fammily. how bigs is the tank? you could have some corys because there bottom dwelllers he migh be ok with them.

Lol, Thanks Luke_emma_23 for your piece of advice! It was a great pleasure knowing that you took the initiative to reply my topic, anyway I would like to ask you another question regarding the betta fighting fish which I am quite uncertain about.

Luke_emma_23. Yesterday, my grandmother did a very ''sadistic'' thing by putting my uncle's betta together with my betta in the same tank. My uncle's betta incidently won the battle and my betta was badly injured. It's fin was BITTEN OFF!! my uncle's betta was so vicious and ruthless until it TORE OFF the fin and the tail of my betta fighting fish.

I would like to know whether if the damaged tail and fin of my betta will somehow eventually grow back again. I would be very thankful if you could at least tell me what is going to occur to my betta's tail in future.

Gracias, Obrigada & Thanks alot!, Luke_emma-23.

Betta are notoriously solitary and many won't tolerate tank-mates at all. Agressive tank mates will end up fighting with it, and the betta will probably pick on brightly coloured or long-finned tank mates, which explains the aggression towards the guppies.

Start off with things like snails and shrimp, and if they cope well, try cories, ottos and other peaceful fish.

It really depends on the fish - all you can do is try and make sure you have somewhere to put any fish that your betta doesn't get on with.

As for the tail - it should heal with time. Make sure he always has clean water free of nitrites and ammonia. Also make sure he's on his own while he heals - he needs to stay happy and relaxed. Keep an eye out for the damage getting infected or starting to rot - it'll go black or seem to have white fluffy edges. If that happens, he'll need some finrot medication.

YES, that was very sadistic. I hope you have told her off!

i had 3 ghost shrimp with mine

over the last 4 months he has eaten 2 of them and seems to be fine with the last one. he will bully the ghost shrimp if it has food because he knows it will drop the food and run, then he eats the food lol

Hi, sorry i have not been here to reply sooner, i agree with the other replies that crystal clean water is the best remedy!! My Betta Jack got his tail caught in his filter & it was badly torn, with plenty of water changes he was soon back to his former glory!!
As for putting two bettas together, i just hope that it was lack of knowledge on your Grandmothers part & not done deliberatly!!
Keep us informed with his progress!!!

Hi i posted the last reply twice, sorry!!! it came out in blue??? whoops!!!

To NKT-BettaFighterChampion!
Hi my friend.Your Bettas will be Ok soon, believe me :-d !
You know, Bettas fishes in nature have to fight to protect their nests or their "Kingdoms". All of them, even win or lose, always leave the battles in terrible conditions( tail and fin.........) But they have to be healthy again as soon as possilbe, or they will be attacked and killed( Life is realy hard and dangerous)
So, if it loses a battle, it will hind in a safe place in good circumstances and wait until it is healthy again.
The only job to do is to give your bettas good circumstances( food, enviroment and lonely, not too bright). In Sout East Asia, we usually put some Tropical Almond Leaves into the tank. They make your bettas feell better. I usually give my fish the circumstances as they are in nature.
Note: Do not put so many leaves into your tank. So many leaves will kill your fish, it is similar to poisoning.
Just nearly a small leave for a 2.5 US gallons tank. If the water gets a bit yellow, you can be delighted and wait, but if it gets dark yellow, change your water immediately.

Hey emma  , the unfortunate matter of fact is that what my grandmother did was actually a intentional act of deliberation and not to the purpose of the lack of knowledge which in other words define pure ignorance.

Well, she knows very well that it's obviously not right to place 2 male bettas into the same tank. But, what does a old lady ''bother'' about? She doesn't give a #41####! to summarize matters up, my grandmother did it DELIBERATELY and NOT because it was of her ignorance.

I know this whole thing is over, and I am pretty glad that I am seeing signs of improvement in my betta's growth. Many of the members come up with the conjecture that it seems like my grandmother was just ignorant. But the truth is she isn't!

Would she be so keen to see two cats for example fight to the death in her front room?
Your betta is lucky to have such a caring owner & you have done a great job nursing him back to health!!
:good:

That's awful. But with TLC your betta will recover well. As for tankmates...I have to wonder if plakats are more aggressive than other tail types, because I have two halfmoons with various tankmates. One of them lives with a schoal of neons and a couple cories. I've never experienced fin nipping from the tetras, but I should mention one of my bettas is an amazingly passive guy. He even has an ovipositer XD..But like the others said, it depends on the fish. If your guy is intent on living alone, just let him be =)

Depends on the fish! I have personally had success with lamp eyes and khulis, limited success with african dwarf frogs though it was a day by day thing

Thanks emma, I'll take that as a mutual compliment..

My grandmother confessed straight into my face yesterday that she deliberately placed my betta together with my uncle's one because she just wanted to see the both of them fight until there is only a sole ''winner'' in their fight.

What do you think she was doing it for? It was for the god-#41#### sake of ''entertainment''. You see, looking at circumstances at home that my grandmother literally doesn't do anything at all except to prepare lunch for me after school and to cook dinner for the family.

Due to her having so much free time and leisure without any activity that will occupy her besides watching soap operas on TV and reading papers, She just wanted some action thriller to entertain her.

As I should let you know that we are chinese, It is a past-time subculture that the people of my grandmother's generation loves to watch two Bettas fighting one another until one of them has to die! It's totally sadistic, isn't it?

So I guess because my grandmother is a little bit too ignorant and she always thinks that the lives of animals are unvaluable, That is my conclusion why she deliberately did such a despicable act on towards my darling fish.

By the way, she quite old already. She just turned 76 this year. and that fact has to give me a good reason why I should forgive her although I am not willing to do so.

It's over anyway. I just want to bury the hatchet. :-(

I know this whole thing is over, and I am pretty glad that I am seeing signs of improvement in my betta's growth. Many of the members come up with the conjecture that it seems like my grandmother was just ignorant. But the truth is she isn't!
Im sorry to hear that!!
Would she be so keen to see two cats for example fight to the death in her front room?
Your betta is lucky to have such a caring owner & you have done a great job nursing him back to health!!
:good:

Hey, emma. Sorry for not being around for quite somewhile. I had to concentrate on my school examinations.

Emma, I would like to know what disease does my female fighting fish has. Recently, it passed away due to very white spots on her body, she could hardly move. Eventually, she died.

during the final moments of her life, I noticed tremendous white depressions on her body. her mild colour soon faded. I would like to inquire what the hell is going on.

It would be great too if the viewpoints of other members are informative.

Pls let me know what went wrong with her, because I immersed her in finrot for like about an hour and she passed away there. peacefully.

thnks alot to everybody who will tell me the cause of it's death. A great thank you. :rip:

Hi, there are very few fish that the fighters will tolerate, some, like one of mine will not even accept a snail in with them!!
Fighters are solitary fish who really do not need tank mates, the only ones i could recommend if you really want to add more are bottom feeders like corydoras, i have 3 in with my youngest fighter and he gets along with them fine.
I do not recommend putting tail nippers like tetras or anything with bright colours like guppies, in with them!!
Hope that helps. im sure some of the more experienced members will be able to help more too!!

Emma :)

Gracias, Obrigada & Thanks alot!, Luke_emma-23.
