The Best £12 I Have Spent So Far...

I think these are the same shrimp I brought the other day at wildwoods, unfortunately I’m terrible with names, but I do remember the algae eating bit. Why I’m not all together sure is mine are no where near as colourful as the picture in Bloo’s link. So does colouring come with age? Or was down to lighting?
I’ve had quick look around the net & it says they fairly easy to breed in aquarium conditions provided of course you both males & females, has any body had any success breeding them?

When they are young, they are pretty much transparent as they get older and bigger the colour starts coming out.

i bought 4 Amano shrimp on thursady, they cost me £2.95 each!!! in the lfs u wer able to watch them all as there wermaybe 20-30 of them in 1tank sine i put them in my 35g tank ive not seen any of them lolnot even the cucumber in the middled of the tank tempted them out, maybe i should but a few more?

Give them a bit of time to settle in as they can be quite shy, but yeah, I've got 8 in my tank and intend to at least double that number.

As I've already said, they get braver if they have loads of place they CAN hide in if they want and also if there are more of them.

In the lfs I brought mine from on saturday, they had babies all over the place in freshwater tanks and the guy says that they breed in there all the time but as Arfie says, I thought they needed saltwater for this, unless it depends on the type of shrimp?
not sure what type mine are (got them cheap cos the guy in the shop wasn't sure) they are kinda see through and have a white stripe from head to tail running down ther backs.

They absolutely need salt water from around days 7 - 25 in their life cycle. Not just brackish water but full strength marine - not only that but "green" water with phytoplankton for the zoes to feed on a grow the first 2 weeks. Zoes will never ever grow in freshwater or survive beyond the first week. They would also need a species breeding setup.

ive spent ages trying to work out how the hell to link to an image so here goes...............mr shrimp stole this tab right from under a 4 inch big yoyos whiskers, who after was completely baffled by his dinners vanishing act! :D

Just found a pic (didn't know I had) of one of mine too who stole a wafer from my twig catfish :grr:

He hung onto that pellet for hours - and would scuttle off at great speed as soon as anyone dared approach him

Will they eat algae from the glass of the tank?

I'm stuck between shrimp or Ottos!

They are popular in slightly brackish tanks too. Amano shrimp naturally occur in slightly brackish streams, swamps, and estuaries, making them ideal for a low-end brackish tank. In brackish water they have a surplus of different algaes to pick from. Just make sure you dont have any puffers!

Get both! Shrimp tend to sit on the plant/decor whereas Otos tend to do the glass, they complement each other really well :D
