with working 12 hour days 6/7 days a week lately the tank has only been getting the bare minimum in the way of maintainance , so today as im not working i thought id give it a good thourough going over. i took out all the rocks and gave the sand a good clean and scrubbed the glass front back and both ends inside and out , wiping down the heaters/filter pipes etc as i went . , then 1 by 1 the rocks were scrubbed with a wire brush and replaced . i took out the cover glass ,scrubbed it and washed all around the top of the tank etc . disconected ,stripped and cleaned both filters including impellars and pipes , washed down the cabinet/hood and did 70% waterchange. this was a little over 2 hours ago and ive just got the hosepipe on to re-fill the tank. the fish should ( better) appreciate that!!

I don't think it was a bad idea.

i also did this, this morninig Mark. I thought i'd cleaned the filter, hoses, intake and out-take...it still managed to blow rubbish back into my tank! Another water change coming up.

lol sounds familiar ian , i hold a net over the filter outlet when i 1st switch it back on now . learned that 1 the annoying way

lol i have never thought of that! :good:

how do you guys clean the hoses for the filter. Mine are minging but I haven't quite figured out how to clean them yet. Esp when the inlet is about 2m long...

i cant see the inside of my hoses with teh flurab grey ribbed ones, so what i cant see i dont clean :D The net over the outlet is a great tip, i been doing it a while now.

my method isnt overly technical lol i just take them off put my thumb over 1 end and fill with hot tap from the other end. then i just take it outside and gently bang it against the wall to loosen any sludge and then blow the water through .

yikes! definitely easier to keep up on that. but I know exactly where youre coming from in terms of time! sure it looks loads better than it did!!

I use an aqua one pipe cleaner, it has a bunch of bristles on the end of a long flexible metal feed wire. you feed the wire end through your pipe and then pull it through, the bristles clean the pipe on the way through. works great.
