Ha ha ha ha ha... That's right I'm cracking up! :hyper:

So... I had problems cycling my tank, got through that, added a few more fish and had trouble with an exsisting fish chasing a new one (Betty's chasing Roxie) it finally subsided, all seemed well. Started having acidic water problem, algae growing everywhere driving me nuts. If it's not one thing it's another right? Cory cat comes down with patches of raw skin, looks like he's been scratching on something... I'm still strugling with that one. So in my ongoing effort to clean up the algae & my gravel I do a partial gravel vaccum tonight.......

After putting everything back in place, something catches my eye..... Staring at me from the top of the filter intake is..... A FRY!! WHAT???!!! @#*@*$#!!!

This is exactly what I tried to avoid when I got the second platy. I was pretty sure as well as LFs that I already had a female so... they sold me another female. When "Betty" (HA!) was chasing Roxie a few months ago everyone said oh the 2 females will do that, they need a male. Well it stopped so I forgot about it cause I didn't want babies!!!! So either BETTY (Ha) is not female since she/he was the one doing the chasing or Roxie came to us already preggers! I've had her a little more than 2 months though.

So my question is, these things don't happen in ones??? Where are the other fry? Eaten? aghaghaghag??!!! This baby has a distinct little mouth because I just watched it suck up a piece of food. So how long has it been in there? I'm really going to lose my mind. I don't want babies.... I don't have the capacity to deal with them & I am such a softie that the thought of thess poor babies getting eaten is making me crazy. What can possibly happen to me next???????? :-(

Well, it appears that you are either going to have to name Roxy "the rock" or Betty Robert.

Now first, lets take a DEEP breath and calm down. 8) Ok, now, it seems you're gonna have to move the little fry to anohter tank if you don't want to see it get fried on an underwater oven.

Ok, now, if you don't want the thing, take it to your local aquarium pet shop and let them take over. (it IS there fault since they gave you a male and a female) Then you little fry can get a new home. Also, you can see if anyone wants a lil' fry.

I got it, name your fry and the two big fish "lil fry and the eastside fish" :D

Ok, well, I hope that helped.

"BIA BIA" Lil jon eastside boyz

and DON'T shoot yourself over a fish.

My local fish store told me that if there are two or three platies that are all female, one of them will eventually become a male-SEX CHANGE-and you will have babies. I didn't believe him. Guess he knew what he was talking about.

I don't know if that is true or not but I've had my doubts that my original platy was female for a while now. He/she is thinner than the one I know to be female.... so someone mis-sexed him.. (hee hee) I think.

Of course I can not find the little fry anywhere now... sigh! I'm going to see if I can get LFs to take Roxie (female for sure) off my hands. I just don't want this hastle right now. One day when I feel ready to move on to a larger tank it may be fun but now it is not! I'm still learning the basics.

Here is some advise about sexing Platies:

Males will generally have a gonopodium...which is their anal fin made elongated for breeding (like a human man-part. lol) Females are bigger, duller, and have a rounded anal fin. :D

I know you probably know this, but LFS owners know nothing I swear!

keep in mind that livebearers can store sperm for a number of months, so she's probably a she and just saved up something. the fry sounds older than a week, maybe even a few weeks. she could very easily of had the fry overnight, when they quite often tend to, many were probably eaten, others may have hid out under plant leaves and aroudn other decor. you may have more, look around and under stuff.

i obviously bought a pregnant platty commented one day how she looked pregnant
next day she didnt look so pregnant - yet i was still surprised to find fry!
and it is true they do store sperm so can become pregnant several times from one mating

Everyone has given you some theories - but here's on that is probably most likely. With platies, when the female is fertilized, she will often stay that way for up to 3 months or so. This means that one batch of sperm can let a female have up to 3 batches of fry without being refertilized. So I'm guessin one of your ladies was fertilized awhile back and she's just using up the "extra"... :p However, it is still possible that you have a male, so I'd check really closely. If you've got both girls, just relax because you won't have any more fry after a month or so max - though I'm guessing this was her last fertile batch since you only found one.

Edit: Whoops just noticed that Many A Molly was explaining this phenom too.
