hi all

i just wanted to say what a lovely bunch you are and thanks for making my daughter feel so welcome

Hattie (littlehattie) has been at home a lot as she's having some pretty gruelling treatment at the mo and has to stay off school due to the risk of infection

i already had a tank and she wanted one too, so off we go to the lfs and couldn't decide what to get. being indisisive with my daughter in tow is not possible so what the heck, we came away with a 75gallon corner jobbie and boy has she been a happy bunny ever since

she's taking it really seriously and doing loads of reaserch on the web, thats how she found you guy's and she's loving every minute.

so once again thanks a lot and keep upi the good work!!!!

LOL! Dont worry you, we all know what mothers can be like ;) Besides, your mum seems like a really cool person thanking us all!

Welcome to the forums, both of you ... and good luck with the fishies! Umm, and early happy "half" birthday!!!

hehe

don't worry hattie, I think your mum sounds ace, my mum would throw a fit if i asked for a new tank. ;)

welcome also to hattie's mum, stick around, there's some great people here and always lots to learn :)

have fun with your new tank :)

*Laughing* well welcome to both of you!

As I said in my post to you, Hattie, I have a 9 year old son who is learning the trade. I also have a nearly 7 year old daughter who just loves anything that moves! She wants to pet the fish, but is little interested yet with the technical side of things.

Yesterday, I needed to do a large water change on my tank. I had my boy (9) guard the tap outside whilst a 30 litre bucket filled on my stairs. (It is on the stairs to allow gravity to help the syphon) Anyway, I called him to switch off the hose...but the water came faster, I was *eeeek!!!* I shouted again, and again! By this time he had panicked and forgotten which way to turn the tap off, so I ended up tearing down the stairs, with my hand trying to hold back the mains pressure flow on a hose (soaking myself thoroughly, spraying almost everywhere else) whilst he blubbed he was sorry and useless. That was fun! -_-

I needed to fill a second bucket. He was flatly refusing to help, he thought he was hopeless...son of a plumber and unable to turn off a tap (!!). I MADE him man the tap, reassuring him he had done great before, and the last accident was funny in retrospect.

I had my fingers in said bucket and started to wonder whether the temperature was ok (he was outside, worrying to death and waiting for the shout)

I was inside, fingers in bucket....not even realising said bucket was already overflowing!!! Naturally I panicked and yelled...naturally Jack panicked and forgot which way was off!!...again I am tearing out of the house with my hand over a hose trying to contain mains pressure water! :D

As much as I tried to console the poor lad after, even laughing (somewhat relieved by lack of damage myself) he would not be consoled. The second disaster was most definitely my fault...but try convincing a proud would be helper!

TONIGHT!! we had a successful water change with a champion (and very proud of himself) helper! :D Even if the bucket did take an age to fill with the little trickle he would allow! :D

*note* These water changes have become necessary since I found my filter power had been disconnected overnight...

lol

have to say mums in charge of water changes, due to three reasons

1. i can't reach into the tank without the risk of falling in

2. don't actually have the strenght to carry the bucket at the mo

3. it just seems like far too much hard work and i'm lazy ;)

hope jack's feeling ok about it all now, i felt awful one day when mum asked me to feed her fish and i didn't realise she took the top of instead of sprinkling, i sprinkled and the top was still loose from when mum last fed them so it all fell in!

we spent ages trying to get it all out again with a big net and the fish were all just getting fatter by the second

:)

To save carrying buckets around, I bought a 30 litre bucket from a home brewing shop (it has a gauge marked up the side so you can see how much water you need to treat) I got the man in the shop to put a tap in the bucket for me. I then put the bucket in place (above the water level of the tank) and fill it with a hose from an outside tap. Once the water is treated, I run hosing from the tap on the bucket, to the tank and turn on the tap. I find it a nice sedate way to refill a tank, since the water is not being poured from a bucket or introduced under mains water pressure, therefore is less sressful for the fish, and does not disturb the substrate or the decor. It is also quicker than adding water a cupful at a time! :D Jack is asked to man the outside tap that fills the bucket in the first place :)

To save carrying buckets when I empty the tank, I add hosing to the output of my external cannister filter and let the water syphon straight outside.

hope jack's feeling ok about it all now, i felt awful one day when mum asked me to feed her fish and i didn't realise she took the top of instead of sprinkling, i sprinkled and the top was still loose from when mum last fed them so it all fell in!

Yes, he is ok, just a little nervous!
LOL! :D I can imagine! Accidents happen, you are not the first!

However much you involve yourself in the care of the fish, it is good to see! I hope your interest and enjoyment continues!

Welcome big n lil hattie.
Littlehattie u have a really cool mom cuz she bought u a new aquarium so u could enjoy it while home from school. i asked my mom the other day if i could get a 100 gallon aquarium n her reply was "if you buy anymore aquariums for this house i will break it as soon as i see it" That really stinks cuz we only have 2 right now.
