Something people here seem to keep missing is that pets at home DO educate their staff in the aquatics department on fish and how to keep them. It's just the information they're forcing these people to learn is by and large completely incorrect.
Although it isn't the shop workers fault he didn't know any better, and you can't tell them they should know it as it's probably not a lifestyle choice but a part time job. Quite a few are making it sound like Gilli towered over the person shouting in their face.
They didn't use any profanities, presumably didn't use any threatening posturing. But did correct the person and was shocked at the severe lack of knowledge. The person agreed with Gilli that actually the advice they were giving didn't quite add up. But until Gilli said something they probably hadn't even thought about what they were saying... I don't hear Gilli saying the guy ran off in floods of tears or went to get the manager for 'protection'.
As I see it... it wasn't the guys fault he didn't know. But Gilli didn't imply that it was, just couldn't stand by and listen to another person being told incorrect advice that would end up with a tank of dead fish.
I must say though, all these little rants at shop workers do definitely want to be directed at head office. As I said they DO pay to train their aquatics staff, it's just that the material they use is rubbish, mainly innacurate and missing alot of vital facts.
Apparently (And this has come from a couple of P@H employees I have spoken too), alot of the info used in the 'training' procedure comes from vets and is therefore correct
. I carefully explained why the information was wrong and have on more than one occasion ended up with the sales person being speechless. I normally just shrug and go 'Hey, not your fault... they really should get it sorted though'.
So actually P@H really could be a fantastic source for fish and advice, they have the money and the brand power to do it. They just need to get their butts in gear and get the training manual sorted!
I have another thought in contradiction to what I said earlier.......just say you had an LFS that DID advise fishless cycling and refused to sell fish to people that hadn't done it. I reckon they'd be shut down in no time coz a lot of less serious people would just go elsewhere.
^^ That's why I mentioned the good shops in Sheffield that I'm happy to buy fish from. Although I'd like them to be a bit more thorough with cycling advice and such. At the end of the day they need to make a profit. They will often sell fish to new tanks, but they send people home with the right sized fish and a bag of filter mulm. They also tell them to come back every couple of days (not once a week... although not once a day which it should be) to get their water tested... and generally try to support people whilst still maintaining a business.
This has gained them a fantastic reputation in the area as less people come away ending up with dead fish. And it's the repeat customers and positive word of mouth advertising that's kept the business going.
