Tetratec Ex700 Leaking!

Good to hear your leaks has stopped. I was about to give the usual list of things to try...

When was the date of manufacture on this one? There was a batch that went about about 6 months ago that had dodgy taps that lead to leaks from around the canister body... They should all have been fixed by now and that stock cleared, but it's possible you go one of the iffy batch...

I didnt use the vaseline, as didnt see how this would help, surely just lubricate the hinges and makes them come open easier?

tetra usually have an amazing public relations, they will send you the replacement parts, jut e-mail them and see what they say.

the rubber o ring will dry out if not properly lubricated causing it to fail

I thought you'd find it on the model sticker on the back, but I've just looked at mine and it's not there. It must be on a separate label somewhere with the filter's serial number that's also missing from the sticker on the back...

theyre one of the best filters on the market:

eheim, tetratec and rena...the big three.

better than fluval externals by a long shot

But they seem to do a lot of leaking

And the leaks are apparently fairly isolated to the EX700 model also, suggesting it's just that line rather than the whole range... They are actually my favourite brand ATM, and all I use on permanent tanks. I also currently use a Rena on a QT/breeding set-up and that is also good. I've had a bad run with Eheim Ecco's and Fluval though....
