Hi ya all i'm new to this site so i'm hopeing that someone can help me with this puzzle i've got !!!!. The problem being i dont know what Tetra i have in the tank, i have looked on this site and came to the conclusion that they are Serpae Tetra's but a couple of them i have dont have the black stripe markings just behind the pectrel fin. I have been told that they could be Jewel tetra"s  so please if anybody knows out there give me a clue !!!!!!.
thanks for reading this :D

The black spot can vary in intensity - often to the point of not being visible. Do all your fish have the same body shape and fins? If yes, the fish with faint markings will probably eventualy develop the color. Have you checked whether you have confused your fish with red phantoms?

:D Thanks Sylvia for answering the query the fish all have the same shape and colouring, all the fins tails etc are exactly the same and looking back at the pictures i have found on the Serpae they look exactly like the tetra's in the tank. The thing that had me was the lack of the black stripe on 2 of the fish it is more than likely as you say that they maybe very faint. Trying to find pictures of the Jewel Tetra has been quite a hard task believe it or not but maybe will find one one day  . Many thanks for your kind help.

Could it be gender dimorphism? Several tetras have colour/pattern differences between the male & female of the species.

Welcome to the forums!

Thank you for the input Sir Minnion, they all seem to be getting on and there is a definate courtship going on between themselves :hey: which is great to watch. If they were a different species surely there wouldnt be any pairing behaviour or would there be?. Is this were the hybrids come into the equation ? do different species mate? :dunno:
