A Tetra is any of a number of species of small South American freshwater fish belonging to the family Characidae and to its former subfamily Alestiidae ("African tetras").
Wikipedia: Tetra

The Characidae are a family of freshwater subtropical and tropical fish, belonging to the Characiformes (characins). They originate in the Americas from southwestern Texas and Mexico through Central and South America. They vary in length with the smallest growing to a maximum length of 0.5 in (13 mm).

To some extent the family serves as a junk-basket category and various forms have been, and probably will continue to be, removed into their own families. The tetras belong here, comprising the very similar genera Hemigrammus and Hyphessobrycon, as well as a few related forms. These include the cave and neon tetras. The larger piranhas also belong here.

This group contains some 1500 species
Badman's: Tetras and Other Characins

The Bucktoothed Tetra is a unique and beautiful shoaling Characin from tropical South American rivers and tributaries.

The body shape is typical of all tetras, except the jaws and teeth are heavier and more well-developed. The coloring and pattern are striking and unusual. There are 2 pairs of huge, black occellatus spots - one covering the caudal penduncle, and one just under the upper-back. The rest of the body is white-silver which is tanged with either violet-blue or violet-red. The fins are often pigmented with red or yellow.

These fish shoal in groups of no less than a dozen and no more than 50. Larger schools are often comprised of younger fish. Insatiable insectivores, they will tear apart any invertebrate unfortunate enough to fall in the water or get in their way. The jaws are strong enough, and the teeth (particularly the enscissors) sharp enough to bite a clean hole out of most organisms. A nip from a larger individual is capable of drawing blood.

no, what i mean is that tetras AREN'T stupid! the title was an (apparently failed) attempt at irony in order to get people to come read this topic.

it drives me crazy every time someone says something like "tetras are boring", "tetras are nippy", "tetras are skittish", "i hate all tetras"... there are literally THOUSANDS of species that are "tetras" and only about 4 or 5 of them are related to neons.

That's great, I was reading your thread and wondering the same thing. Your use of irony is well-noted, and it accomplished it's task, getting me here. Very good information.

I was a bit confused about your title too  but totally agree with you. It boggles my mind that people can give such a sweeping statement about Tetras in general -_- when there are zillions (well almost).

I dont understand why a lot of people dont like the Neons. I like the ones I have and they are quite active :dunno:

wow I didn't realise there are so many different ones.

Ok, I wil take back that "tetras are boring" comment I made in a previous post, so pica doesn't hate me. :look: :X

I still think almost all tetra are boring, with the exception of exodons. For me, its not about variety of the species, its about how they act. Tetra all have similar habits, thats the reason why I find them boring.

LOVE my diamond tetras. Flashy little fishies! They're the celebrities of my aquarium. Non aggressive, sparkly, swim at all levels of the tank, not fussy about food, what more could you ask for?
