Hi there,

Hopefully this is fine to post here. I've been given this tank by my brother and looking to start my first tank up however, the light seems to be poor and I wanted to replace it. I was going to purchase a replacement for this, but he said he had problem growing plants before which may be due to the light as he used a proper substrate from Tropica and CO2 so I was wondering whether it would be better to tank the top of the tank off and stick one that goes over the entire length so I can also have the blue light or whether there is one that will fit inside as a replacement that offers a brighter light for plants and also the blue light as it looks like this can just clip in.

I'm quite new to this so apologies if the wording was poor but thanks for any help!

Remove the old light unit and look for another light unit that fits over the top of the aquarium.

Try to get globes that have a 6500K (K is for Kelvin) rating and has equal parts red and blue light with a bit of green thrown in for good measure.

Thanks for the reply - just wanted to ask that I plan to keep Shrimp in here (kids choice) and as far as I have read, providing they are happy they will not try to climb out, so a light over the top would be fine?

I have a Fluval 107 filter with this we picked up on sale and changed the filter media for Purigen and Seachem Matrix as well, should I add anything else into the filter? (it does have the sponges and fine filter floss (not sure if that is the right name, but the white stuff at the bottom tray).
