Tetra Species

Will different species of Tetra shoal together happily?

I have kept Cardinals & Neon’s together and they school fine.. The answer would really depend on the species of Tetras that you’re planning on keeping though!

Bleeding hearts & Congo Tetra would not school with Cardinal or Neon’s for instance, someone else may be able to answer for definite but I would think that species the same size and body shape should school i.e. Glow lights, Neon’s, Cardinal, Black neon, Embers etc...


Personally I would advise getting more of the same species rather than a mixture... To thrive they should really be kept in groups no less than six of each species (more is always preferable).

Thanks for the reply mate. I think i will probably end up getting the one type but was just a bit curious

Just thinking if it is possible for different species of tetras to school together, then does the same apply for more agressive fish like oscars.

Trying to learn as much as i can haha

I have 11 Cardinals 6 Prastilla and 5 Glow light Tetra and they all appear to shoal togethor.

But then again they are never very titley shoaled as I do not have any Fish that cause them any reason to be afraid.

I have neon tetras and white cloud mountain minnows which shoal together! ^^;

But white clouds aren't tetras; back when I had cardinal tetras before they all *DIED* within a week they shoaled together with my few little neons that I had back then. ^^;

I have red eye tetras with emperor tetras. They chase each other and play and kind of school losely.
