We planned to have tank mates for our betta and got 10 neon tetras. Initially, we kept the betta and the tetras in separate tanks as we were working on the main tank. Tetras were living with the Angel tank.
But then, right from day one, tetras died one per day. At night, we check and count them and by morning, they will be shriveled or sometimes couldn’t find their body at all. At first, we thought it could be the Angels and put them in a different tank. But still, the count of tetra decreased one or two, every morning we checked.
There was one tetra that never stayed with the school and finally he became the only survivor. We thought he too would die as it might be the tank conditions but to our surprise he survived and grew bigger in the tank, all alone. We named him, Mr. Psychopath.
So, once again we got four more tetras to see if they could live in our tank. We lost one the first day because of stress but the three others survived and lived together as school. So we planned to introduce them to Mr. Psychopath and we noticed that the rest of the tetras feed on the flakes when we feed them but Mr. Psychopath rarely joins them. We thought it could be because he isn’t part of their crew (he is bigger in size than them).
But the next day, after Mr. Psychopath’s entry, we found one dead tetra at the bottom of the tank all shrivelled up. We were worried and wondered if we should remove him (we saw him attack his reflection when he was alone in the other tank). But later, he mingled. There were no more dead fish and our betta is happy with them too.
But, we could not explain the weird behaviour of Mr. Psychopath nor why the tetras died earlier. If anyone knew about this, it would be great if you could let us know so we could be more cautious next time!!!

I really don't think you've a rogue tetra killing so many others. What are your water parameters? Can you give more information about the tank in which fish are dying?
