I was wondering if I could put one of those miniature terracotta pots in my aquarium. I have seen it done before, but is it safe? Which kind should I look for? (Glazed, unglazed, etc). I would like to use it as a refuge for some ghost shrimp.

P.s. I posted this in the hardware section too, but I wasn't getting any replies...

Unglazed pots are usually recommended as cheap and dirty spawning caves. They're perfectly safe. I don't know about glazed, but I don't see why not. Unglazed pots are cheap, and if you're careful about cracking them, you can get two caves out of one.

I use unglazed, no worries (Apistogrammas)

i used unglazed too, no problems at all, peter22uk, uses glazed, but hes posh

hahahaha yes i use a glazed pot and have had no problems.....HOWEVER....some glazes may displace chemicals into your tank...so use them with caution.

mine has aquatic life safe glaze on

Wow, thanks for all the responses everyone!! I put an unglazed pot in my aquarium this afternoon, I hope my shrimp like it, so far I think, they think its some sort of giant fish mouth and are hesitant to enter. :p

I use unglazed and glue them together to create a larger cave for my badis to hide in, I drill out the base hole a bit more though to ensure that no-one gets stuck between and all of my badis love them.
