Just wondered if anyone has got any or has ever had any? What they like to keep as pets?

Cheers!!

ther dead intresting to watch and fun but do eventuall need a big tank like 100 gallons
here is some info i wacked 2gether in the other thread
the femails can get to sizes of 12" the males usually smaller i feed mine on dillies and cabbage 1 dillie each day atm untill they get older then tone it down to 1 every other day also they need food with good calcium for ther shells (cuttle fish are ment to be good)
1 of the bigges warning i have found with the yellow bellies is when ther adults all terripins can give u a nast nip but the yellow bellies could acually have the end of ya little finger of it you aint careful
its best to handle them for 2 mins a day from a very young age to get them used to you so they dont snap so much when there older
make sure they have a fair bit of water 2 swim in and a nice bit of land for them to stand on. also try and kill the current a bit in the tank if it is small as i found that they cant swim to well in to strong currents
would also reccoment live plans for hiding in and eating
also if you go to buy 1 take yourself a plastic container as the store may try and give you him in a bag and thats no good as they have claws lol

they also lv to eat mussels ,,prawn and pieces of meat,,,and if they can catch them fish ,,,i have my baby turtle in a community tank,,its fine but small fish like neons dont stand a chance with them,,

really in a community tank?!? what sort do you hve how big is ya tank and do u got a basking area

Hi, I have kept turtles for about 15 years and have a Florida Softshell, a Chinese Softshell, 2 African helmeted turtles, an African sideneck, 2 Yellow Bellied Sliders, a hybrid River Cooter, 2 Loggerhead Musks, Mississippi Map, False Map and a Eastern long-neck - The Florida Soft Shell is my favourite.

They are great pets but they're a long-term commitment!

Sam :)

yep i have a baskin area for it,,the tank is a 3ft er,, its a yellow belly,,,lovely to look at,,,it has started taking lettuce from my hand now lol

Hiya

You already have some great advise on here so im sure you`ll be fine..they are great pets to have and a real talking point!

Just make sure you are ready for the comitment, i have found my yellow belly and map belly really easy to look after and cleaning them isnt a problem, can be messy though.

The one thing i would warn you about is the sizes they grow to, they get very big very quickly and tanks arent cheap so make sure you get one that will last!

When i got my babies they were like 50p pieces, now they are HUGE!!

Good luck!!

Ann

Hi,If you must keep turtles in with fish then you need to remember that i) the fish will probably become food one day and ii) there must me no lid / condensation tray on your setup as this would make it far too humid for the turtles and lead to a RIDo you have a UVb light over the basking site?Sam :)

one last thing... lettuce is a poor food for chelonians as it has very little nutrients. Try Dandelion leaf or Duck weed (feed the Duckweed in a seperate tub and make sure there are no hitch-hiker bits on the turtle when you put him / her back in your main tank... it grows like mad and can nacker your filter!)Sam :)
