Hi :)

I've got my fish now after a successful fishless cycle. I have a question about temperature though. Initially I had it set to 26 but my LFS, who seem great, advised dropping it to 24, the temperature they kept them all at. The tricky thing is that it depends which sites/books you look at as to know what temperature to set the tank to, I find it hard to know who to believe! My favourite book would suggest that 24 is right but I have seen some places saying that Odessa Barbs should be no higher than 24 degrees (the book agrees but others say 26) but that Blue Rams should be set no lower than 26 (my book says 24). All the fish SEEM ok at 24 but I'm slightly concerned, especially as I know the rams are a little delicate. Is it better to change it to 26 or stick to the temperature they were in the shop I bought them from? What would people suggest?

Thanks

Hi Hoyfoys,I,m no expert but I believe Blue Rams like the temp up around 80deg,thats what I keep mine at anyway, but I think Odessa Barbs like it quite a bit cooler around 74/75 deg,so maybe somewhere between the two,Ive read somewhere rams are open to infections if kept in water not warm enough, best of luck with them they are worth all the trouble

The problem that you have is that your fish, although compatable, aren't really compatable. Lol. The difference in temperature will shorten the life of the barbs if too high, where as it will leave the rams open to infections if not kept high enough.

On the other hand there is at least one member on here who has successfully kept blue rams at 24 I believe. Try doing a search, it was covered not that long ago. Maybe you could try Bolivian rams as they cope better with a bit lower temperature I believe. :) good luck.

yeah blue rams should be kept at 28c-32c or they are open to poor health. Maybe increase the temp to 25c to find a middle ground

Some of my tanks can maintain 23c without a heater and I have kept golden and odessa barbs at this temp and they are fine. There is a definite conflict between your fishs needs in terms of temp

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll up it to 26 degrees and go for a compromise, though I'm nervous of this. Where would you recommend finding out accurate temperatures from as I couldn't find them all on this site and other sites vary so much.
