Hi, I've just had my second outbreak of white spot  which only seems to have affected my mollie. I've upped the temp to 80 degrees and the white spot is clearing. The tank was around 74. What is the recomended temp for an average tank?

Recommended temp varies by the fish you have in it. Mollies prefer water in the range of 68-82 degrees, whereas goldfish prefer much cooler temps.

have you added any new fish lately? ich is a parasite that can exist in the tank and is undetectable to the naked eye. the fish show the symptoms of ich when it is attached and feeding on the host fish. just because you got rid of the symptoms of ich does not mean that you have rid the tank of ich or introduced it into the tank again through new fish. ich is more prevelant throughtout the winter months when tanks have a tendency to run cooler.

depending on the size of your tank, keep a thermometer at the end opposite of the heater. on my larger tanks i have a few to make sure that the temp is constant throughout the tank.

with new fish you should quarantine the fish in a seperate tank. after three weeks of no signs of disease, then add to the community.

when you raise the temp of your tank, you should do it slowly so as not to add stress to your fish. stress is the leading cause of disease in fish as it makes them more vulnerable.

Added a new fish on wednesday, it died thursday. Mollie came down with ick friday! Not using lfs again!

Treated with temp increase and meds from shop (can't remember name but it's green)

Sorry to hear about the sick fishes :-( If you are trying to treat the whitespot with heat then you will need to get the temperature up to 86+ but be careful cus not all fish can stand these temperatures.

I have just had an outbreak of whitespot and although my main tank is doing nicely with meds and heat..one platy went barmy and I thought I would lose him. I ended issolating him in a QT tank and adding aquarium salt with heat and this is working a treat! Mollies might benifit from the same treatment as they like the brackish water and the salt acts as a great tonic (making them feel better).
