Temperature Problem

Hi set up new 56 galon tank today ,bought from some one so it is theur equipment.300 watt heater got it turne ddown as far as it will go around 18 or so .My pleco behaving strangely and i figure its too hot ..trying to get the temp down but staying at around 30 which i know is too hot

What was the temp set at before you saw it was too hot?

Don't turn it down to 18*c, that won't do your fish any good when the temp starts falling, it'll go to low instead.

Start doing water changes and use slightly cooler water, try 30% to begin, that should start your temp coming down ok. Aiming for 23-27*c for the gibby.
