Just wanted to share my experience with tiger barbs in a community tank.
I used to have 4, but they were only in with 2 rosy barbs. they never messed with the rosy barbs at all, but they messed with each other too much. one little guy was all nipped down and hid behind a plant all day all night.
i got 2 more, for a total of six. and though they do seem a LITTLE chilled out... occasionally they like to go after my firemouth in a gang like formation. haha. i don't think a high number of tiger barbs can ever totally eliminate nipping. tiger barbs are just the 'bad little kids' of aquarium keeping i think.
They do cause me a lot of headache, but it's too late for me, as i am attached. they really are great to watch. but in the future you'll constantly be asking at the LFS before you buy new fish "will these be OK with tiger barbs?"
