My telescope goldfish Bubbles was the victim of a horrible injury that occurred last night after I turned my tanks off. The eye is completely gone it looks like a pretty clean break other than there is one nerve/string of tissue still hanging on to the socket. I'm pretty well experienced in taking care of fish illnesses/injuries but I am wondering whether or not I should try to do a home operation and remove the nerve? It's about 2 inches long and I'm quite sure if I leave it, it won't heal or it will get caught in a filter or eaten by another fish. I have clove oil on hand to sedate him with.

If you can sedate him I don't see why you shouldn't do it. But I would put him in a hospital tank and treat with Maracyn and Maracyn 2 to prevent infection.
