So, I got a metal stand for my divided betta tank for Christmas, and you can put tanks on the bottom, and I would like to put either my 5 gallon or 10 gallon tank on the bottom. The only problem is the tank would only be 3" off the ground. Would a gravel vac still work? As I know the bucket has to be lower then the tank, and in this case it wouldn't be by much...

will work fine, I have a 12g on the bottom of a stand. as long as the end of the tube is lower than the start of the gravel vac it works just fine.

Sypon is a litle slower but yes you can still clean the tank.

I have a few 42 gallon tanks on bottom stands just a few inches off the ground and even when I drain them I can sipond/vac almost all the water out expect the last inch or 3.

Can't see it being a problem at all.

Hi MegTheFish :)

I was less happy with my bottom tanks when I had gravel substrates than I am now that I have switched them to sand. With the reduced suction it was not very easy to dig down and vacuum up the soil in the gravel, but since it's not necessary to do this with sand, I have no problems at all at water change time. :D

In my fish room I have some tanks that are only a few inchs off the ground and I can still syphon from them. The syphon is a LOT slower though and the suction is not as great. It works well still though. Its definately worth the trouble of having a little bit slower syphon to save all the space that would be needed to have tanks all on one level.
