Would anyone suggest putting a hillstream loach in with a betta??

Or would a group of 3corys be better/safer??

Thanks.

I would not put a male betta in with anything, ever.
Others had diff opinions, but that's just my philosophy.
To me, it's just not worth the stress to etiher the betta or whatever else is in the tank.

Hillstream loaches are coldwater fish I believe and prefer the lower temperatures so not sure how that would work. I have 2 of them in with my son's black moor in a coldwater tank. They also like very fast moving water which most bettas do not usually like and prefer to be in groups.

I have bettas in with plecs and they have no problems with them but I think cories sound a much better option :) Mine never bother with the cories except to try and muscle in on their sinking wafers

edited for spelling :*)

I have a Cory living with a bunch of female Bettas, and that Cory has never been harrassed at all. I'd say Corys would be a pretty safe bet for tank mates, but each Betta is different, so keep an eye on them when first introduced.

Ok when he is in after a week or 2 i will get some corys about 3, which is the best, peppered, albino or bronze? or are they all ok? I like the peppered and albino, can they be mixed? like one of each (bronze, peppered, alibino)? or would it have to be 3of the same?

Thanks

I don't know if it would make a difference at all, but my Cory is an albino.

cories do better when kept with the same species, so i would pick your fave and go with that! :D

Albino ones are absolutely nuts and zoom around all day, so they could be a tad annoying for your betta in a small space. I have 2 of them amongst other types in with my female community but they have plenty of room to escape the mad things :fun:

I think my bronze are the quietest out of the ones you mentioned

Can anyone else mention another sort of plec or somethng? I sasw plecs in the store and they were small or do they all start like that? I also saw a hillstream loach or what i thought was a loach in a trop tank for 2.50 is that right?

I will probs go for the bronze corys then.... As there really isnt anything else to go in with him is there?

Thanks

What size tank is your betta in?

This may determine whether you can have a plec or other tank mates at all

The smallest of plecs I know of is the Bristlenose and its ok to keep one on its own. They grow to around 4"

Why do you want a plec? is it to mainly eat algae or just a tank mate? Sorry to ask all these questions, but it will help make the right decision for your betta

Not all plecs eat algae although the BN (bristle nose) is one of the best and they don't attack other fish. Lots of these small plecs you see in the lfs grow to enormous sizes and can become very agressive or need to be kept in groups. Try asking the question on the Catfish section as they will have more ideas for you :)

It has already been said though, that generally a male betta is better kept alone

My new tank that the betta will be going into is 3gallons, it big though massive compared to what he is in at the momment.

So a bristle nose only grows to 4inches??

I want a plec because they are nice fish to look at etc....

with a tank that size, i don't think you could have corys or a plec....sorry

Plecs are poop machines, trust me I know as I've got a few. A 3 gallon tank is only suitable for a betta I'm afraid. If you work by the inch per gallon rule there is no way a plec or a small school of cories could go in there with a betta in my opinion :/
