Had the tank filled for 48 hours now, was full of oxygen bubbles at the start but now they've all gone the waters gone cloudy

Is this normal?

If not any way to get it clear again?

Cheers

What have you got in the tank?
Live plants?
Fish?

It could be a bacterial bloom but I can't think of why that would happen...
And did you cycle your tank?

Got 8-10 live plants and 2 guppies.

Went for the fish in type rather than fish out hence why I only got 2 fish rather than about 20

It'll most likely be a bacterial bloom. It's very common in new tanks and will clear up either on it's own, or with a few, large water changes. It's not harmful to fish, unless it gets very bad; bad enough to reduce the amount of available oxygen, but that's very uncommon.

Unfortunately, it's not the same kind of bacteria we need in our filters

with regard to the water changes

should i leave the fish in the tank whilst doing them

the water going in, does it have to be the same temp as the water in the tank? or can i just use the tap / hosepipe?

gonna do a 25-30% change today

Do at least a 50% change, and be prepared to do that every day with a fish-in cycle. Yes, leave the fish in the tank. Yes, temperature-match the water, opting for slightly cooler by a degree or two, and never warmer than the water that's in there. Don't forget to use dechlorinator, preferably Seachem Prime or StressCoat+.

Yes, you leave the fish in the tank and drain off the amount of water you want to change with a syphon tube into a bucket. For water changes that size you can probably get away with straight cold water, but cycling tanks need a bit more TLC than long established ones; I'd recommend using buckets of warmed water (don't forget the dechlorinater!) at the moment.

Don't forget with a fish-in cycles, you need to be testing for ammonia (and in a week or two, nitrite as well) so you know how much water you need to change. You want to try and make sure the ammonia (and nitrite) never gets above 0.25ppm or you'll cause long term health problems, or even death, in your fish.

Not to highjack someones thread but I have a question to add to the discussion.
When I do water changes I siphon out water into a bucket, dump the bucket and then add tap water to the bucket mixing hot and cold to match the temp of the tank water. Then I add the dechlorinator to the bucket, give it a stir and set it aside for 5 minutes or so to give the dechorinator time to work. Is this time necessary? I know not just to but the tap water straight into the tank or the chlorine in the tap would kill the bacteria that I am trying to grow in the filter. Should I believe the claim on the bottle that it works instantly or in seconds?

Dechlorinaters do work more or less instantly, you don't need to leave it for five minutes. A quick stir and it's ready to use :good:

Changed your mind from the fishless cycle  ? Completely your choice, of course, but are you aware of what maybe required from now on though? Did you manage to get a test kit?

Terry.

Yeah got a bit too impatient lol. Just bought a test kit on eBay for 25 quid, made sure it wasn't the strip variation so will give it a bash when it arrives

I'm treating these fish as guinea pigs and I'm fully expecting them to die but if they don't then bonus! But at least I know il have the bacteria or whatever it is to get going

Cheers

I'm afraid statments like that aren't going to do you any favours on a site like this

Not necessarily. If the poor guppies die before the cycle is finished, you'll be no better off, except you'll have killed some fish :(
The bacteria are exactly the same, whether it's a fishless or fish-in cycle.

mmm sad to hear you say that Peter C, it's a poor attitude to have towards a living thing IMO

Not good poor fish!

Its all time in the fish game. When i do a water change i put the water in a 2 10L bottles and put the dechlorinater in and leave it to settle for 12 hours to a day. This will get the water to room temperture aswell.

I siphon the water into a 15L bucket and then refill with the bottles with a tap on.
