We have a 20 gallon tank that was started in April of this year. Currently there is: 1 cory cat, 3 platys, 6 neon tertras and 6 black skirt tetras. Earlier this week we had a sick albino cory, an antibacterial med was suggested. We went to our LPS and picked up the API Tetracycline for the fish. We were told that it wouldn't harm the other fish and to follow the directions. 2 doses of the meds were given and then a 25% water change was completed. Another 2 treatements were done and during this time the albino cory did die. The day it was time for the water change again, the water had went from a tinted yellow color to red. That was on Wednesday. Since then another cory has died. We did a 50% water change instead of the 25% per the meds and the water is still red. My Husband also put in a new carbon filter yesterday and things don't look any better. Since we have started the meds until now the levels have been:

amonia 0
nitrate 0
nitrite 0
PH 7.6
temperature 78-79

Had water tested at LPS last night and was told it was OK and that the discoloration was due to the meds. From past experience we are a little weary to take their word at 100%, so any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

are you running carbon while giving meds ?
scot :good:

the directions has said to take out the carbon when giving the meds. when we were done with the meds and the water was red we put the carbon filter back in.

sound just had me worried you where tryin to medicate and running carbon coz it wouldnt of worked

Meds can discolour the water.
Did you increase aeration in the tank.

we were having the water make more waves in the water when we were giving the meds. is that what you mean by aeration? Do you know approximately how long it will take for the red color to go away?

Thanks.

The red colour will only go doing water changes and using black carbon after you have finished the med course.
Its wise to have a pump and airstone when using meds as meds reduce 02 in the water.
Plus it helps circulate the water better.
