I found a small 3 gallon octagonal tank. I just cleaned it up and put water in it to begin cycling. I was wondering if I could put a very small red claw crab in it by himself. I saw them today at Petco and thought they were very cool but I do not want to put anything else in my main tank because it is already overstocked (I am looking for a cheap larger second hand tank to fix this problem). Would this 3 gallon tank be ok for just the crab alone? They were less then 1 inch long.

Yes, that's fine, just make sure there's a tight fitting cover, as they can climb the tubing and whatnot to get out. And make sure the water level isn't too high and that you have a rock or other structure they can climb that sticks out of the water. They need to be able to get out of the water.

Ok, Thanks alot. There is a tight fitting lid and a light. Is 5 inchs of water to little? I have a rock structure about 5 inchs high. i can look around for a larger one but not sure what my search will come up with.

As long as its enough water to cover them because they are aquatic, but like to get out of the water and "sun" themselves. :) I just ordered 3 of them myself today.
