when cycleing your fish tank is it supposed to smell like anything, when i walk up to it and look in through the top i can smell something in the water, its not bad but im wondering if it is always gona be this way or if its the process?

Is this a new tank? As i had a similar problem with a smell coming from my newist tank and it lasted about 3-4 days, but after that it was fine. I thought it may have been something to do with the light and the reflector or maybe even the filter 'wearing' in. Never had the smell from any other tanks though.

As mentioned above it could be the smell of ammonia if its a real strong smell

yeh its a new tank filter and everything.

i dont know ill just see how it goes

If it smells like pumpkin, it's probably just rotting plant matter caught in the filter media. I had that happen to me. Was a lovely smell actually. :p

A healthy cycled tank should smell like freshly turned earth.

Exactly like newly turned earth. My husband will come in and say 'Ahh you're messing with the tanks again - horrible smell' and I say 'but it smells lovely and earthy...'
Some smells smell good to one person and horrid to another!
