Tank Size

Hi there people, just a quick question. Im looking to move onto keeping marine fish (not a reef tank - just the fish) soon, having kept tropical fish for a while now.

I currently have a Juwel 96 tank and display stand. my question is,"is this tank big enough".

My water chemistry keeping is good, ive had no problems and i know how to deal with problems e.t.c.

I dont plan to keep many fish, surely i could fit in 2 clowns and/or some damsels? Please help me, i really want to keep marine fish!

Someone else will have more complete information for you , but until then, my book (Eyewitness Handbooks Aquarium Fish) says that a minimum 36" length by 12"width (sorry, M8, can't convert that to metric for you) is necessary for marine setups due to the extra oxygen these fishes consume. I'm not sure what you mean by juwel 96, I've never heard of it. But... if it's 96 gallons as I'm guessing, you'll have decent options. I don't know what kind of FW fish you've raised, so I'll have to generalize a bit. The keeping of certain types of tropical fish will add a lot to your marine success, while the keeping of others will add a m

Sorry, not in the know about marine set-up. However, for those who do know, here is the spec for a Juwel Rekord 96:

Volume: approx. 96 litres
Light System with 1 x 18/20 W tube
JUWEL Filter System: Compact

Size: 81 x 46 x 36 cm (32" x 18" x 14")

Given Alia's comment on minimum 36" x 12" then it will be wide enough but not long enough.

Man... talk about technical difficulties. Sorry cbrown, I had quite a bit of info there but same thing happened to me as Alia...???

Those dimensions look about 35 US gallons to me... yeah you could do a SW fish only tank in that, but it would be considered a "nano" type tank. 2 or 3 small fish would be near its capacity, and due to

the small size, the chemistry would be tough to control. But... if you study up and prepare yourself, there's no reason you can't be successful. #1 rule- go slow, study, be patient. #2 rule- cycle fishless.

Honorable mention rule- anemones are tough. (to keep alive.) Some folks can get a little sore if they think you might be

If you're a dedicated hobbyist, go for it. The satisfaction is worth the trouble.


What is wrong with this board? Anyway, hope that helps cbrown. If you ever think about moving up to a reef, the rules are pretty much the same, just much much more important.

The book says that surface area is what determines the number of inches of marine fish you can have -- so your length is probably fine, since your width is greater than the example and it is length times width (in your case, 32 X 18, or 576 square inches) that matters. The formula for marine fish is 48 square inches of surface area per inch of fish, to allow for enough oxygen. That's only about 12" of fish.

i own a jewel vision 260 56 gal tank that i plan to keep marines in

i havent yet got marines but have been reading books and using the ultimate reef bulitin board for a year and a half so i know a thing or 2 about marines in theory anyway.
and i would not recomend keeping marines in such a small tank.
these fish are a lot lese tollerant to ph cemical and temprature fluxtuations
also these fish can not tolerate amonia nitrate and nitrite where as tropical fish can
your tank is about 22 - 23 gal and most ppl recomend that the smallest tank to use should be about 40-45 gal
also to keep clowns not nesacery but if u want to give the best home you are going to need an animone but these creatures are extremly hard to keep and i would not recomend keeping 1 for at least a year of having fish only hope this helps
