Hi peeps.

Just wondering what the tank size for an Oscar is? I know i can google it etc, but i want peoples actual experiences.
:good:

75 gallon upward,my personal exspeince was in a 150g with other fishies, again you have to be selective for what types to keep with oscars..

Heres alot of infomation gathered and shared by oscar keepers, hope it helps

The key is the length of the tank and the tanks footprint. The general consensus is a length of 48+ inches with a width of 18+ inches which basically is 75G+

Ooh... Can I join the Oscar club?

Agreed with the above sentiments, 75g minimum - 4ft x 18".

Zophie, unfortunately, along with the other 'clubs' the Oscar club was closed down :(

Depends on your experience/resources. Personally, depending on the dimensions of the tank I think that 55G - 60G up is fine for at least a few years but you might want to plan for somthing bigger later. Oscarfish.com say 55G for life but I think this is pushing it a bit. Basicly the bigger the tank the happier your fish will be.

If you look at my recent thread you will see I have a 2 year old Oscar in with a small Jag and a few dithers. This is fine for a time but I'm working on 100G to house the Jag in a few months.

Thought the 'OC' was pretty naff myself but I have to ask why it was closed? Totally harmless! There is so much control imposed on here by Herr moderators these days!

It wasn't the oscar club that was the problem. It was the millions of other 'clubs' that were springing up for everything just so people could put in their sig that they were 'president of....' or 'vice chancellor of...'
It was getting beyond a joke n so a decision had to be made. They had to all stay or none stay. The rule was none stayed, it's a shame for things like the oscar club which were actually a very good resource, but at the same time there is no rule against having an oscar megathread in the cichlid section... so it's not too bad :good:

Fair enough. Havn't been on for a while so didnt realise people had got all Power-Trippy saying they were the President of all Oscars! Sad. lol

Kept an Oscar in 80 gallon tank from the time it was approx 3 inches long until it was nearly 10 inches long which it achieved in a little over a year.
When the fish was young, it got on well with other cichlids in the tank but at six inches, it began to show a marked dislike of convicts,Acara, and smaller Green Terror and they had to be removed.
Tank was filtered with two Emperor 400 filters by Marineland and water changes of 50 percent were performed twice weekly. They are serious waste producers and messy eaters as well.
A 55 gallon would in my view be suitable until the fish reached the six inch mark at which time, I would provide larger quarters.
Would place the tank away from areas where fish could suddenly become startled such as around a corner. At nearly a foot long,, they are quite capable of displacing a considerable amount of water when startled, and Mine easily sloshed a half gallon of water from the tank when excited or startled.
I finally placed the tank across the room where the fish could see who was approaching before they startled him, and sloshing of water was reduced.
Foods that were offered were Frozen krill, frozen spirulina based shrimp, frozen prawn, Emerald delight, silver sides,Hikari Bio -gold pellet, and chopped earthworms and occasional cricket.
Tank was decorated with large pieces of driftwood and large smooth river stones over approx one inch ,to maybe an inch and a half of pea gravel which made gravel vaccuming much more effective than with deeper substrate. Hope this helps.

I feed my Oscar a steady diet of Tetra Doramin sticks with a few whole mussels a week as treats.

From what I understand, although I've never kept an oscar myself as I can't house a tank large enough at this present time :-(

I believe it is 75gal for an oscar alone, with no other tankmates. Also double rated filtration is required as they are very messy fish. To have tankmates with an oscar that are big enough not to get eaten then you'd need to be looking at a 100+ gallon tank

Dude... Question alredy answered. By people who keep Oscars...

Before I knew any better I raised an oscar in a 55 gallon tank from 3 inches to 14 inches and in my opinion 55 gallons is too small for a full grown oscar, so I'd have to agree with the statement of 75 gallons minimum.
