how big would a tank have ot be for a purple dittyback, clown fish and a puffer....greater then 20G or 29G?

Unfortunately the puffer would not be suitable for a small tank.
They generally grow to 1foot or so long and need a minimum of 55g - or even 100g.
I'm not sure what the smallest available puffer species is (and I'm at work so don't have my books handy), but I don't think there are any much smaller - apart from brackish water species.

Also, the puffer would probably eat the others once it got big enough.

A clown and dottyback would be ok in a 29g tank, as would various gobies, blennies, chromis etc.

You will have no problems with a cown or Dottyback in these tanks. The puffer is a definate NO :/

If you are asking the question "which size should i go for" then the answer in all cases is the larger of the 2 tanks. If you can afford and fit a larger tank then its a far better option to purchase this as you job becomes easier in keeping the conditions stable.

Not had any experience with them but from what Ive read you might want to be careful about a dottyback in a 20 gallon with other fish as they can get quite terratorial.

i was wondering becos i have a green spotted puffer i used to have with a black molly in brackish and he did fine......but he can be in SW so if there are possibilities to have him in SW with soemthing nice and colorful would be AWESOME
