Ok so shipped out my stock list to other members of the family.

Decided on getting an oscar with a few other tankmates as going for a few species rather than a big community tank. From what I have been reading i should be looking at the likes of Severums, Jack Dempseys, Convicts and RTBS.

Not had any experience with these so can someone who has please advise if this is right as this is what I have managed to pick up from other forums so far.

Cheers

The only ones I can advice from personal experience is red spot severums hate oscars! I have 2 red spots, they are ok with oscars when they are smaller but as soon as the oscar get to the size of the severum war starts. However my 1 red spot is currently living with a small oscar but only time will tell, my other oscar is living with Rotkeil severums (same size) with no problems. Convicts breed like crazy so would advice same sex if you have more than 1. RTBS with severums & convicts is fine, mine was a bit of a pain chasing the convicts while I had them, but never bothered the severums.

So I should be ok with an Oscar. Convict. Rtbs and severum as long as its not a red spot one. No experience with them so will have a good look on the web so that I know how to tell the difference when I go to buy them.

I would go for a green or rotkeil sort of severum, about 4-5" with the smallest oscar you can find if you are buying them all together. If not I would get the severum first, then convict & rtbs, then JD and oscar last again a small one :good:

Just called a few of my local fish stores. They have convicts. Oscars which they said different kinds including albinos. And 1 severum. All she said was he was a yellowish pale colour with red eyes. Any idea if that type is ok.

Albino or lutino (sp), more likely lutino, but tend to be sold as albino (whitish with orange markings), from what I have read these are the more docile of the oscars, I have 1 and is very placid (well was till yesterday, I think she is about to spawn  ) tiger oscars are reportedly the next and red oscars are supposidly the more aggressive. I have 3 tigers and they seem fairly chilled.

The severum sounds like a gold from the discription, I have one (what a suprise  ) fairly chilled but does tend to have a bit of a go an my tiger oscar of the same size. Thats the tank "pending" the tankmates getting along

My other tank with Chops the tiger he is no bother with the rotkeils and was fantastic with the 2 greens I had, but due to lack of space I sold the greens.

Hope this helps :good:

I would do

1 Oscar
1 Severum - preferably rotkeil
1 Sajica - instead of a convict more community friendly and less psychotic

the RBTS is not really an issue in levels of aggression, they can be quite nasty but thats when people keep them with guppies in 30 gallon tank ;) In this size tank with these fish not a problem should just be considered part of the stocking of the tank.

Some spotty silver dollars would look nice in that tank as would a school of columbian tetras with some hoplo cats for the bottom - or pictus both do the same job :D

Appreciate all the advice. Going to try get them all tomorrow. Just got the last of my stock out the tank apart from 3 clown loaches which are a nightmare trying to catch. Don't want to leave it too long incase my bacteria dies off. Hopefully I can get these last 3 out then should be good to go tomorrow.

Depends on what sort of plec your looking at, smaller ones could be lunch for an oscar, best ask in the plec section.

Common or Gibby would be fine with the above, I thought you might have been thinking of a smaller one. I have to admit I just adore the big commons :good:

Just called lfs in sunderland and they have small oscars. Green severums. Convicts. And jack dempseys about 1 to 2 inches. Should get them all or leave out the convicts or jd. And are green severums ok.

Green Sevs are fine, I would recommend you get the largest of the sevs, convicts,jd and the smallest Oscar, as the Oscar will grow at double the rate of the others.

I will have a look when I get there. Will they all be ok together if I am getting them all together or do you think I should leave out any of them.
