Is there room for a dissenting opinion in this thread?
Frankly, I am not sad the *OTM competitions are gone. In addition to the cheating that went on (rampantly) towards the end of the OTM run, there was also quite a bit of unpleasant campaigning for votes (IME) via PM and livechat (when I was more active there)... I also noticed it cropping up from time to time within threads.
On the internet there are lots of opportunities for unscrupulous people to cheat...if you're inventive enough, it's possible to find a way around just about any cheating countermeasure...then the countermeasures escalate...then the cheating escalates...and then instead of having a friendly tank and fish exhibition, you have a competition about cheating.
I think Navarre's suggestion about mods being the ultimate judges is a good one, but doesn't that open the mods up to a ton of potential criticism about favoritism, biases, unfairness, etc? Despite their hard work, do the mods really need to be more of a target than they are?
If we're really the Friendliest Forum around, shouldn't we be less about competition and more about sharing? Maybe a "Tank and Fish Gallery" (similar to the user gallery, but with ... tanks and fish
) might be an alternative?
If you really wanted to be about a little competition, the gallery could support comments and page hits (much like the old user gallery), so that the "goal" would be to foster as many positive comments and views as possible. Cheaters could be removed once detected (if you could even call it cheating). You could even have a subsection of the gallery devoted to "hall of fame" tanks, or a simple title or a star next to "hall of fame" tanks within the gallery or something...the criteria would be enough page hits or positive comments or what have you, thus encouraging people with the prettiest tanks and fish to post more.
The time spent for maintenance of this type of gallery could fall upon an enthusiastic member (don't look at me
) instead of a mod. Needless to say, campaigning for views and comments would be frowned upon.
