Tank Move Imminent

Hi,

I have to move my main tank from the front room into my dining room a rio400 the current stock is 2 Red Severums, 2 7" Oscars, 1 Plec, 5 Clown loaches and 4 bristlenoses.

The Plec and one Severum are being re-homed as they are getting unwanted attention from one of my oscars.

Now my question is this,

The tank has the Juwel Background in it which i want to remove and paint/vinyl cover the back whilst the tank will be empty, i thought about housing them in my spare Rio180 with nothing in but the fish and my externals (keep them cycled) for maximum of a day or few hrs atleast to allow the tank move to take place over easter weekend.

Do you think this would be possible, its not ideal but better than holding them in tubs etc having to heat all individually.

I want to avoid pulling that background out whilst the fish are in the tank due to debris (its siliconed in well so wont be easy to remove)

I see no problem in putting them in there, just as long as you transfer them properly by allowing them to sit in the new tank in bags, then slowly add water to the bags that the fish are in. Just like you would when you bu fish form your LFS.

Make sure to match temperatures as much as possible.

Should i leave them in there until the day after th tank is moved so they dont get over stressed? the tank move should only take a few hrs at most along with removal of the background. Dont want the stress of being caught then put in new (much smaller) surroundings then being caught again a few hrs later to cause any problems.

I would move them back in as soon as possible, as the larger water volume is going to allow them with more space than there temporary home, which will make them loose their stress quicker.

EDIT: I would take water out of your tank that you are moving, and put it right into your temporary tank, that way the water parameters will be the same ( and temperature for the most part). This will cut down on their stress level during transfer.

True, better take a trip to LFS to get some rather large bags then (gotta go anyway to ask them to take in the plec and Severum that a having a haard time)

and yes i wa ging to use the water from the tank to fill the holding tank

Rather than bagging up the fish to move them repeatedly - why not add tank water from the moved tank to the temporary tank by bucket and pipe? Granted - you would manually have to match water temperatures (not exactly but at least within a degree or so), but it would prevent the netting, bagging, emptying, netting bagging emptying process from stressing the fish out. You could also acclimatise all your fish at the same time.

Once you have been adding the "new tanks" water to the temp tank and have allowed time, You could simply net the fish up and carry it in the net to the main tanks new position. Or net the fish and put it in a bucket of the new tank water and release it by putting the bucket into the main tank and gently tipping it out.

I'd go with Saz on this,

However once the 180 is half full of the current 400 water, simply move the heater and the external over as well (your 400 will easily hold it's temp enough to totally fill the 180 and move fish over).

Then you have a bit of time to sort out the 400.
