I have a 33G tank with 7 dwarf neon rainbows (2 males, 5 females) and 6 zebra danios.
The neon rainbows and danios get along well.

I would like to add a few more fish to my tank, preferably something with more color.

I'd like some suggestions please.

some options I am considering : 3 cherry barbs ( 1 male 2 females)
But would like something more colorful possibly 3 male platys to add some color to the tank ?

thanks

The beauty of rainbows is not just their colors. They are compatible with almost any of your usual community fish and can be used as dithers in rift lake cichlid tanks. They are very adaptable and versatile as long as their needs are met.

There are many fish that would bring more color to your tank, but it all depends on your personal taste. I think the limiting factor here is going to be the danios in the sense that they are small and might get eaten by larger fish.

Have you looked into gouramis? Very interesting mid sized fish that bring a good amount of personality and color. They come in many varieties, but I am partial to the powder blue and the gold.

Barbs would also make good tank mates. The cherry barbs you are considering will make great additions. They will occupy the lower regions of the tank, and if you get both sexes, you will see an intense red to your males.

Thanks much for the suggestions.

The neon rainbows are kind of small now, even when compared with danios.
neon rainbows I've read only grow to 6 cm. They are wonderful though.

I've considered and do like gouramis, but would they go well with the active fish I already have in my tank ?
zebra danios I have are well behaved and leave dwarf rainbows alone. But concerned if they'd bother the gouramis.

I've never tried the combination, but I have had zebra danios and I have had gouramis. The zebras will be fast enough to stay out of the way of the gouramis and so will the rainbows. I was just throwing them out there since they aren't a small fish but would still be suitable for your tank size. Hopefully someone else will come along and give us a second opinion.
