ok id like a 3rd addition to my tank but they 110% cannot breed w/ yellow labs or demonsi... + they gotta be attractive, well i could work on the attractiveness but id like yalls sugjestions

Before answering that question.... ;)

What is the size of your tank? (inc. dimension?)
How many of demasoni and yellow labs do you currently own?
How large are each?

haha i was coming back for that! i was like oh crap they dont know anything about my tank...

actually right now its holding 1 lonely yellow lab... will have like 4-7 of both labs and demonsi... i got a 40gal breeder tank... i 4get dimensions but the bottoms alot bigger then a 55gal, 22x18x12? maybey those numbers came from somewhere(not saying its a tank though) i dunno but yeah

+ i just need tank mates not how many

++ the important thing, i want ones that have the females yellow and the males blue(thats the most common right?) it can be reversed but i want the male 1 color and the females another...

Ok... Lets start with the tank - 40g breeder typically has 36x18 footprint - not a huge tank for mbuna but it is feasible to hold some species.

4 - 7 of Yellow Labs is not a problem. Try to keep as little male (1 if possible) and the rest as females and you will be ok.

Demasoni is far trickier. Although I don't have them yet, I will be setting up a breeder setup in the near future, so I had to do quite a bit of reading on these species on the net. These guys are soooo brutal within their own species that in your sized tank, anything less than 12 would most likely end up with one demasoni at the end! If you want some blue, I suggest you get some other species that are less brutal than demasoni. I would personally not create a 40g breeder setup that contain Yellow Lab, Demasoni and another species - sounds like a recepe for disaster...

If you like Blue and Yellow (with that color morph between male and female), why not try Pseudotropheus Saulosi and Pseudotropheus Acei? Melanochromis Johanni also has the color morph but is a little more aggressive compare to Saulosi, but is a possibility if you are willing to have lots of rocks.

Personally, I mixed Yellow Labs and P Acei - they get along great and they breed like rabbits!

also a total side not but not worth making a new thread... you know when you pull the fish outa the water and check the belly to see what sex it is(4get what thats called) well how cal i tell the difference between male/female? is all males the same or do they differ in species ifso tell me how to check a yellow lab :)

ugh your gonna make me pull out the tape measurer!

anyways demonsi's are allrdy desided on... i had some before, 3 + #### i 4get blue w/ lateral lines and well a bunch, and while they picked on eachother they were still fine... brb measuring

36x18 1/2 and 16 high

man i thought there was a 22 in there heh oh well

+ what you mean not a huge tank, the footprint is bigger then a standard 55gal and aint the footprint the thing that matters

About demasoni - it could work for many months then one day, one decides to take over the tank and kill all other demasonis. This has happened to many many demasoni keepers who didn't keep enough of them. Juvs are not territorial enough to create this kind of problem...

seriously? ive done some research as well, noones really said anything that harsh about them... mine were adult but i only had them oh like 3-4months or so...

+ fyi yellow lab/demonsi/other will most likely have 1 male and 3 females(unless the guy needs more) maybey if my male is a true diehard hell get like 6-7 females :) i dunno i gotta keep my tank size in mind though, i cant have 20 of one species...

also i do have a hospital/temp tank + i keep close track of my fish, there fun...

++ man not to be rude but this was to gain info not have a conversation about my fish, thats kool too but i want my info first :)

Having conversation is part of having fun...

If you do need some proof, check out the forum www.cichlid-forum.com - they have some seriously experienced mbuna (and other africans) aquarists there. Try posting the same message and see what kind of response you get... Actually, before that, try searching their archive on "demasoni". You will get plenty of info from there all from people who actually experienced through them.

Good luck! ;)

If you must go ahead and populate 3rd species in your tank, the following are compatible to your previous two species (IMO, I still believe 40g breeder is too small to pull this off):

- Iodotropheus Sprengeraes
- Maylandia Estherae
- Pseudotropheus socolofi
- Pseudotropheus Acei

Good luck! ;)

will any of them breed w/ either? i heard the estherae might possibly breed w/ them... + i had them before... + i was thinking maybey trofis(sp bad) would they work?

also yeah im a member of that forum(as well as use there database http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/) alot

thx for your consearn though... and i will ask again i guess

If you keep enough number of their own kinds, at least the above mentioned species won't likely to produce hybrids. Perhaps you might have heard about red zebra and cobalt blue cross breeding, which is highly likely.

Under "Tropheus", there are many species and just about all of them are not suitable in a mbuna tank, unfortunately...

I believe this depends on the strains. You can get red zebra that are orange/yellow for both male and females, while it is possible to get another strain where you see the color morph. To tell you the truth, I only saw all-one-collor variety at LFS - I've only seen the blue ones on the web...
