Tank Mates For A Beta

yh but you should have a pretty good idear alredy on how your betta will react depending on wheter its quite agressive or not. i would just add 6 and then if you need to take them back you take all 6 back. they wont like being on there own evan for a day or 2 they will get stressed out.

dont report me this time though because i disagreed with you

I like to have my cories in my tanks in much larger numbers than the 5 or 6 mentioned. I get them into a tank a dozen at a time and they are great fish for me in that kind of group. I only ever think of tiny groups of them, like 5 or 6, in a tiny tank like a 5 to 10 gallon betta tank.

I agree with you on part of this, kizno1. No cory likes being alone and you are definidefinitelytly right about that. But buying them just to try them out is not a good thing to do. These are small and fairly delicate fish. Netting them and switching them from one tank to another is stressful to them. To return them after they are attacked by a bigger fish is stress piled upon stress. In the long run they will suffer from it.

It's best not to buy any fish that you are not entirely sure you want and will be able to keep.

I just wanted to add that yesterday I added a SMALL female platy to my female betta tank. The betta is chasing around the platy a bit but overall they seem compatible because they each have the option of hiding within the plants and decor AND they move at a similar speed. To feed them, I feed my female betta in the front hand corner of the tank and twice now sprinkled food for the platy at the back side. Neither have fought over food yet. (10-gallon tank)

ETA - Just wanted to add that I pre-planned a back-up in case the fish didn't get along. If they fought I would (have) or still be moving the platy to my guppy tank.

Actually Kizno, I find that the females and males are about equally aggressive with other species of fish. The only time I see serious aggression with bettas is when there is a male involved with another member of his own species. They are sometimes even too aggressive to breed them easily because of what they can do to a prospective mate.

yh i know they can be as agressive but from my personal experances female betta only seem to be agressive towards other female bettas and are fine with other fish. but it dose depende on the fish i had a betta that lived with male guppys for agers it died so i got a new one and it killed to guppies in the first night. so getting back to topic you will just have to see how agressive it is before you think about adding other fish.

I've kept pygmy corys with bettas before. But I had about 12 and it was a community planted tank. Lots of places for everyone to hide. It's the tank in my profile picture and it was significantly larger than your aquarium.

I've kept microrasboras too, but that was with a really placid, really long-finned betta. A HM that couldn't out run them. I've had good results with rasboras as well. But they are too large for an 8g.

I've certainly got a few ideas thank you.

My plan IF the tank becomes available is to either have a singular male beta with snail/shrimp OR to have a male beta mixed with a few other fish; I would add the other fish first and let them settle in and then add the beta in.
