Tank lighting

does the light bulb in the tank hood need to be replaced from time to time? mine is still working fine but it probably hasn't been changed in years. the plants in my tank don't seem to grow very well and i was wondering if that could be the reason

Yes I think you should change the bulb yearly. Those fluorescent bulbs can last up to 3 years maybe longer but after about a year they lose a lot of their effectiveness.
