I have a 30 Gallon tank which I recently bought have tropical fish with water temp set to 78 degrees.

Should I leave the tank cover open or closed. It seams with the tank cover closed I get an odour. With it open it is much less strong.

Any help in this matter is appreciated.

Thanks

well, if you keep it open the water may evaporate more quickly. also, what types of fish do you have in it? if you have anything that might try to escape, keep it closed. nothing worse than coming home to find a fish flopping on the carpet (or worse, already dead for hours, then you'll really have a smell problem). i keep mine closed and don't have an odor problem. is your tank fully cycled?

All tanks have an odor...With that said it now depends on the strength and offensiveness of that odor that would be the problem. My tanks smell a lot like NATURE and its kinda cool....If it smells like a fishmongers then there is a problem but if its just an earthy smell your ok. Also with the question of the lid keep it closed it lets less water out (evaporation) and less stuff can get in. If you have certain kinds of fish you need to seal your tank up with screen and all the way up to bricks on you lid. (eels-arrowannas) I just had a eel jump ship so to speak and it was really sad. And Ive heard stories of arrowannas knocking the lid off a tank before. Hope this helps

Among the other good reason already given for keeping the lid on, it also helps stabalize the temp.

If there's a foul odor I would try rinsing your filters and doing a couple wc's/gc's.

 I usually keep the aquarium tank lid closed.

First to keep the fish from jumping out of the aquarium tank
Second is to keep the temperature stable
Third To minimized water evaporation

I have mine closed all the time but cant say I get an odour when I open up for feeding, see the post on smelly water in the beginners forum Here. I dont like dust settling on the surface of the water, with a juwel internal filter it doesnt seem to skim the surface at all.

I keep my lids closed all the time. And the back of the tanks have heavy plastic duct taped down. Still it amazes me how some fish can find a way to jump out. I recently lost my beloved sailfin molly named Zues this way. I found him behind the tank already dried up. :-(

I love the way a healthy tank smells, Tazman12. :D

But, I have a cat, so I keep my lids closed. ;)

I very rarely have my tank open. The other day my silver shark jumped right out in front of me (i spooked him). I tried to catch him but he landed on the floor. I got him back in the tank and now after his little excursion to the "other side" he seems more content in his surroundings. Smelly water problem should be addressed but don,t remove your tank covers.

Very strange.......we seem to have a run of jumping fish!

Within the last few days I've posted to several threads about the subject. Judging by this, I do think it's important to keep the tank lids closed. Better to be safe than sorry.
