80 gallon planted aquarium with BGK, red tail shark, and tiger barbs. I have heard mixed reports on BGKs and red tails and tiger barbs from pet stores in my area so figured I would check here see what the opinion is. Also for 80 gallon seems like I would have room for some more fish since i would only put 4-6 barbs any ideas for addition tank mates? Thanks this is an extremely helpful forum.

imo it'd work. an 80gallon should be just about enough for a full grown bgk. your additional tank mates should be large enough not to be food for a 20cm bkg in the future. you may want to try considering spiny eels, namely the zigzag and the peacock. fire and tire track eels will need a larger tank.

I have tried to keep red tail sharks with bgks and the result wasn't to great. The shark terrorized everyone and nobody would come out except at feeding time and they were still nervous. If they did come out, he would force them back to a particular spot. Now that the shark has been taken out, the other fish come out a lot more. Also, tiger barbs can get a bit nippy, but in a larger tank like yours, they should be fine as long as they are kept in a school (imo, 3 fish is not a school. Try maybe 5 or so). I second the spiny eel idea and if you heavily plant the tank, you should see him a lot. I have one in a planted tank and I haven't seen it in the sand for months. You could also do a school of congo tetras. I think they look great and they are too big to get eaten by a black ghost.
