hi

last nite the filter in my main tank gave up and died, not before adding a murky foggy like effect to the water.
i had to put in our spare filter and a bubble thing.
and this morning although the water looking at it from the front of the tank looks clearer , looking from it at the side there is still a foggy effect to it.
not sure what to do.
do i go out and get another filter, or what.
really worried as do not wish to lose any fish

any help, advice will be of great help

many thanx
aggy
xx

sorry should add, the filter was washed at every water change with water from the tank.
and i changed 25% or so every week

Yea, that sounds like a bacteria bloom then. It's normal for new tanks. and is harmless for the fish. Nothing to worry about. :) Not to be pushy or anything, but I see in your profile that you have 2 female bettas in a 3 gallon tank. I'm hoping this tank is divided.

ok so nothing to worry bout there, panic over, but thanx to my filter dying still need to get a new one as can use the spare one all the time, lol

no it was not divided, I was under the impression females can live happily together, as in all the lfs i know they have loads in the same tank, n their tanks where not much bigger than mine.
besides my Alfred and Mable are now in same tank, plenty of small places she can hide where Alfred can not get her,lol

My other female is now in my community tank

my second male whom i bought yesterday is still in his own tank

You mean a male and female? Either you have some really calm males or he just hasn't attacked her yet. I'm curious, how long have you had them together? I've heard of people successfully having males in females together, but vvvveeerrrryyy rarely.

Ok, I don't want this to sound like an attack, I'm just concerned about your fishes.

Females can live together, but only in groups of at least 4 in at least a 10 gallon tank. They need to be in groups of 4 or more to establish a pecking order to spread the aggression. 2 females in a small tank will fight and one will eventually kill the other. I believe Bettamomma had an experience like this. They will still fight to an extent as they establish their pecking order, but once this is established there is generally peace and quiet. I have not seen a nipped fin in my 10 gal female community for months. Petstores keep them in small tanks together cause most of them don't really care, or don't know, and it's only temporary.

Males and females should never be kept together except for breeding. Either the male will chase down the female and kill her, or vice versa. That and you don't want to accidently breed them. They can have a spawn of up to 500, and when the males reach a certain age they need to be housed seperatly as they will get aggressive torward eachother and start fighting/killing each other so unless you have lots of time, space and money on your hands, you might want to think about doing something different with Alfred and Mable.

Male bettas and guppies are never a good combination. The betta will mistake the guppies long colorful tail for another betta and will attack/kill them. I have read about people keeping guppies and female bettas together successfully, but would still keep a close eye on them to make sure.

Your 5.5 is way overcrowded. What I would do with your fish and tanks is go get 2 more female bettas, and put all the females in the 15 gallon with 4 of the catfish and the 2 guppies, put Alfred in the 5.5 with the other two albino cats, and leave the new guy in the 3. That would save some lives and make everybody happier.

ok i admit i was wrong with the females, but i did not know.

Alfred and Mable are together for breeding, the space-time n money are not a problem.

Alfred and the guppies got along fine, Alfred was boss.

my 5.5 as far as think fish .co.uk are concerened is on the limit, no other fish can go in there. at least i think it is only a 5.5, it is 31 cm width, 61cm length and 31cm high.
