Hi there, here's my 30 gal tank as a of a few weeks ago. I've since added some live plants, but it still looks basically the same. I was hoping someone would have some ideas for how I can make my tank look more....engaging

Am not the best at this stuff so all I can say is a background and more plants! Hopefully someone more creative will be along soon :)

The lights look a bit dim. Maybe upgrade? I agree on the background. A black one would look great.

Wow, so much potential! :D :D
Maybe add more plants...like, A LOT? Then put the tallest/leafiest ones at the back and in the center, make a "jungle" all along one side of the tank, at one back corner try siliconing together a rock pile and putting epiphytes on it to make a jungle cliff... also maybe leave only a low growing ground cover plant to look like a lush meadow (if you don't mind hiding your black substrate that is), and maybe in the middle a piece of moss covered driftwood/rock or two? Also you could stand up small pieces of wood and attach moss to the ends so it looks like a tree?
I don't know, just some ideas ;) You could also look on YouTube for aquarium design ideas...they have some great videos there.
Hope this helps ;)

I'm cheap, I'll see if I can't pick up some black construction paper for a background :p I agree, a background would look good.
Yeah, my lights are a little dim, the hood only has a capacity for 1 bulb. I have an LED strip, (Blue, should have gone with white, oh well. ) Either way, I lost the suction cups for it so I can't hang it on the side of the tank ATM.

I didn't put in enough substrate, it's only 1/2 inch in the back (It compacted when water was added, I swear I added more :p) But I'll just have to add more.

I wanted to make this tank mostly natural, but the root decoration I have just provides such a nice hiding place for the fish (Or they think it does, but I can totally still see the :p) It looks better when Algae grows on it, but the BNP I bought is doing too good a job lol. I'll have to attach some Java moss to hopefully make it look a little more wild.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

YW!
You know what might look awesome for the background, if you do decide to go with construction paper? You could draw leaves, flowers, curlicues or whatever with either light colored chalk or soft pastel, and it will seem to glow :) I've tried it before (though not on fish), since they are opaque colors the black will not show up through them.
