Are any loaches that you see at the lfs tank bred? I would prefer to only buy tank bred fish so that wild numbers aren't depleted but most web sources regarding loaches suggest none have been bred in captivity and most are wild caught....is that true? Would like a group of 3 loaches that only grow to 3-4 inches and won't kill each other!

Find lfs are not very forthcoming on this kind of info

Thanks
Andy

Here is a list of some you good try;

Botia dario, Botia striata, Acantopis dialuzona, Pangio khulii, Botia sidthimunki, Botia macracanthus and Botia kubotai.

Most botia species are extremely hard to breed in captivity and in most cases it has not be done or has been done only rarely. Previously Loaches were brought in from the wild but now alot are farm breed in commercail fish farms in the far east using hormone injections.

Loaches are cyprinids not catfish. :)

there is only one knowned record of breeding clown loaches so its hard i guess

just about every loach is wild caught, they are very very hard to breed and usually only happened by accident, I'm trying to breed the clown loach right now. I had this one fool , he said he seemed to have a steady supply of baby clown loaches, but he WOULD NOT tell me what his tank conditions were. Seems like they breed only when their owner really isn't interested in the species and they don't record conditions and steps.

Not true, alot of the Loaches on the commercail market are captive breed using hormone injections as I stated above. :)

I'm talking natural breeding, the way it should be. :angry: thousands of clown loaches are caught by people that live near were they are found, the put bamboo poles in the water were they are found and the clown loach swims in thinking it's a hiding place, and usually each pole yeilds at least one fish.

Well you said;
Just about every Loach is wild caught...
Which isn't true, the majority if the Botia species including the Clowns are breed using hormone injections in far eastern fish farms. I didn't say it was right I just says that this is where the majority come from. :)

Not around here, but you know how different places tend to have different things :fun: . Mabey it's like that by you, but around here just about all of them are wild caught, let's just drop it because depending were you live it varies to much.
